India has repeatedly <strong>raised concerns over Canada&#8217;s inaction.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2023 <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/18-10-2024\/india-canada-diplomatic-fallout\"><strong>Diplomatic <\/strong><\/a><strong>Row: <\/strong>Relations deteriorated after the Canadian PM alleged Indian involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen linked to Khalistan extremism.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India dismissed the allegations and expelled Canadian diplomats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talks on trade and economic agreements were suspended due to the diplomatic fallout.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief on India-Canada Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Historical Relations: <\/strong>India and Canada established diplomatic relations in <strong>1947<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shared democratic values and Commonwealth membership have underpinned ties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relations were historically strained after India\u2019s nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998, due to Canada\u2019s non-proliferation stance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic Cooperation:<\/strong> In 2024 (January \u2013 August), total bilateral trade in goods amounted to USD 8.55 billion (India&#8217;s exports: USD 5.22 billion and India&#8217;s imports: USD 3.33 billion).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Negotiations continue on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Civil Nuclear Cooperation: <\/strong>Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (NCA) signed in 2010, operational since 2013.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Joint Committee oversees implementation of the 2010 Agreement on \u201cCooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space Cooperation: <\/strong>MoUs signed in 1996 and 2003 between ISRO and Canadian Space Agency (CSA).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cooperation includes satellite tracking, space astronomy, and commercial satellite launches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISRO\u2019s commercial arm ANTRIX has launched multiple Canadian nanosatellites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Science and Technology:<\/strong> Department of Earth Science and Polar Canada have started a programme for exchange of knowledge and scientific research on Cold Climate (Arctic) Studies.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Memorandum of Cooperation between National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) and POLAR Canada was signed in 2020.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>People-to-People Links: <\/strong>There are around 1.8 million Indo-Canadians and one million non-resident Indians in Canada, making up over<strong> 3% of its population.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India is the largest source of international students <\/strong>in Canada, with Indians making up around 40% of that group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong cultural exchanges and vibrant diaspora influence bilateral perceptions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multilateral Cooperation: <\/strong>Both countries cooperate in forums like the G20, Commonwealth, United Nations, and International Solar Alliance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2013Canada relations have strong foundations and significant potential, especially in trade, education, and clean energy.
