class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav released the revised <strong>Green India Mission (GIM) document for 2021-2030 period.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The National Mission for a Green India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The National Mission for a Green India (GIM) <\/strong>was launched in <strong>2014 <\/strong>as one of the <strong>eight core missions<\/strong> under India\u2019s <strong>National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The mission aims to <strong>protect, restore, and enhance forest<\/strong> <strong>and tree cover<\/strong> in India while <strong>addressing the challenges<\/strong> of climate change through both adaptation and mitigation strategies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Green India <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/22-05-2025\/integrating-mission-life-with-national-action-plan-on-climate-change\"><strong>Mission<\/strong><\/a> is being implemented over a <strong>10-year period from 2021 to 2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A portion of the plantation activities has already been completed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the current trend of over <strong>2 million hectares of annual tree plantation <\/strong>continues, it could cover anothe<strong>r 12 million hectares between 2025 and 2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Key Objectives and Targets: <\/strong>One of the primary objectives of the mission is to <strong>increase forest and tree cover on five million hectares<\/strong> of forest and non-forest land.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Additionally, the mission seeks to improve the <strong>quality of forest cover on another five million hectares.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mission also contributes to <strong>India\u2019s climate commitments<\/strong> by aiming to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO\u2082 equivalent, as part of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Revised Projections and Area Requirements:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the Forest Survey of India (FSI), if all planned restoration activities are implemented<strong>, India could potentially achieve a carbon sink of 3.39 billion tonnes of CO\u2082 equivalent.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To meet this goal,<strong> the mission would need to increase forest and tree cover over an estimated 24.7 million hectares of land<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Micro-Ecosystem Approach in Vulnerable Landscapes: <\/strong>The mission proposes a <strong>\u2018micro-ecosystem\u2019 approach <\/strong>to address ecological restoration in vulnerable landscapes.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These landscapes include the <strong>Aravallis, Western Ghats, arid regions of Northwest India, mangroves, and the Indian Himalayan Region.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The approach involves <strong>region-specific restoration practices<\/strong> that are tailored to the ecological needs of each area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Key Strategies for Implementation:<\/strong> Restoration will be carried out through the <strong>recovery of open forests, agroforestry, and plantation on degraded lands.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tree plantations will also be undertaken on <strong>wastelands,<\/strong> along <strong>railway lines, and national highways <\/strong>to increase green cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The FSI has identified that the greatest potential for creating additional carbon sinks lies in <strong>restoring forests that have been degraded in the last 15 to 20 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mission Governance Structure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The National Governing Council <\/strong>of the Mission will be chaired by the <strong>Union Environment Minister.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The National Executive Council<\/strong> will be headed by the Secretary, Ministry of Environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Directorate will be supported by a team of experts and secretarial staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Progress Made So Far<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Field-level interventions under the mission began in the <strong>year 2015\u201316.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By 2020\u201321,<\/strong> a total of <strong>11.22 million hectares<\/strong> of land had been brought under various plantation and
