{"id":45662,"date":"2025-06-18T21:01:25","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T15:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=45662"},"modified":"2025-07-04T16:23:34","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T10:53:34","slug":"the-51st-g7-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/18-06-2025\/the-51st-g7-summit","title":{"rendered":"The 51st G7 Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prime Minister Narendra Modi held <strong>productive exchanges with G7 leaders <\/strong>on key global challenges during the <strong>G-7 Outreach Summit at Kananaskis in Canada.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This year\u2019s<strong> G-7 Outreach Summit,<\/strong> being hosted by Canada, is <strong>themed around three core pillars<\/strong> of \u201cprotecting our communities around the world\u201d, \u201cbuilding energy security and accelerating the digital transition\u201d and \u201csecuring the partnerships of the future\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In 2025,<\/strong> G7 partners are marking <strong>50 years of partnership and cooperation.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This was the Prime Minister\u2019s <strong>sixth consecutive participation in the G-7 Summit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He addressed a Session on <strong>\u2018Energy Security:<\/strong> diversification, technology and infrastructure to ensure access and affordability in a changing world&#8217;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensuring affordable, reliable and sustainable energy is India\u2019s priority.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India highlighted the <strong>priorities of the Global South.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Besides the summit, PM Modi is expected to participate in<strong> four bilateral meetings with the leaders of Germany, Canada, Ukraine and Italy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Group of Seven (G7)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Group of Seven (G7) is an <strong>informal grouping of 7 <\/strong>of the world\u2019s advanced economies and the European Union.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its members <strong>meet annually<\/strong> at the G7 Summit to <strong>discuss global economic and geopolitical issues.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The G7 was founded in<strong> 1<\/strong><strong>975<\/strong> in response to the <strong>oil crisis<\/strong>, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States formed the<strong> Group of Six.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Canada joined in 1976, forming the G7.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These countries represent about<strong> 10% of the world\u2019s population<\/strong> and nearly <strong>30% of the global economy by GDP.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The European Union <\/strong>has<strong> observer status<\/strong>, and is<strong> excluded from the rotating chairmanship.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>With the inclusion of Russia in 1998,<\/strong> the group temporarily became the <strong>G8.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In 2014, the group returned to the G7 format.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mandate: <\/strong>The topics at the G7 Summit <strong>change every year, <\/strong>depending on what\u2019s happening in the world. Some common areas include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>International peace and security;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economic growth and inflation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climate change and energy use;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Artificial Intelligence and technology;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health and future pandemic response;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trade policies and supply chains;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The goal is to find solutions that benefit not just G7 countries, but the entire world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The changing agenda and thematic priorities of the G7 are determined by the <strong>respective presidency.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Decisions are usually taken by consensus.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India&#8217;s Growing Role At G7 Summits:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India, though not a formal member of the G7 has been <strong>recognised as a powerful and influential global player.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has been consistently invited to the G7 Summits as an <strong>outreach partner since 2003,<\/strong> reflecting its growing economic and geopolitical significance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has been invited to attend the G7 Summit outreach sessions <strong>more than eleven times, <\/strong>and <strong>every year since 2019.&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>This frequent inclusion underscores India&#8217;s role as the world&#8217;s fifth-largest economy<\/strong> and a <strong>key voice for the Global South<\/strong> in addressing global challenges such as climate change, energy security, and economic development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why The G7 Summit is Important?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Economic Influence:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/29-06-2022\/48th-group-of-seven-g7-summit\"><strong>G7 <\/strong><\/a>comprises some of the world\u2019s largest and most advanced economies.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Its members collectively represent a significant share of global GDP and trade, giving the group substantial influence over international markets and economic policymaking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global Impact of Decisions:<\/strong> Decisions and commitments made at G7 summits can have far-reaching effects on global trade, financial stability, climate policy, and humanitarian efforts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crisis Coordination Platform:<\/strong> The G7 serves as a critical forum for coordinating international responses to global challenges, such as economic downturns, pandemics, wars, and geopolitical tensions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Symbol of Multilateralism: <\/strong>The G7 exemplifies
