In 2018, the International Energy Agency estimated there were 2<strong> billion ACs in use around the world<\/strong> and that the number of residential units tripled from 2000 to 2022, to 1.5 billion.&nbsp;<br>&#8211; The agency also said that as of 2022, 43% of people in the Asia Pacific region were still in need of additional cooling.<br>&#8211; <strong>India is currently<\/strong> adding 10 to 15 million ACs each year, with another 150 million expected over the next decade.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Functioning of Air conditioner<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It works by transferring heat from one place to another using a <strong>refrigerant in a vapour-compression cycle.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It absorbs heat from indoor air via an evaporator, where the refrigerant boils and dehumidifies the air.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The refrigerant, now a superheated vapour, is compressed\u2014raising its temperature and consuming most of the AC\u2019s power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It then releases heat to the<strong> outside through the condenser,<\/strong> condenses back into a liquid, and is expanded to <strong>a low-pressure mix before returning to the evaporato<\/strong>r.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is most efficient when the refrigerant operates within its optimal temperature range for heat absorption and release.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e6e4e6\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/06\/how-air-conditioners-work-1024x320.png\" alt=\"how air conditioners work\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-45375\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e6e4e6; width:600px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/06\/how-air-conditioners-work-1024x320.png 1024w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/06\/how-air-conditioners-work-300x94.png 300w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/06\/how-air-conditioners-work-768x240.png 768w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/06\/how-air-conditioners-work.png 1130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concerns related to low temperatures<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Health experts and international guidelines highlight that<strong> temperatures below 18\u00b0C<\/strong> are not only uncomfortable but also harmful, increasing risks of <strong>hypertension<\/strong>, <strong>asthma<\/strong>, <strong>respiratory infections,<\/strong> and mental health issues, particularly among the elderly and children.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technically, ACs consume the most power during compression, and they operate <strong>most efficiently <\/strong>within certain thermal ranges that align with the proposed limits.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The World Health Organization and various studies have confirmed that indoor <strong>temperatures below 18\u00b0C can negatively impact<\/strong> <strong>cardiovascular <\/strong>and <strong>respiratory health<\/strong>, lead to higher cholesterol, lower vitamin D levels, and even contribute to depression and anxiety.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Proposed restriction of Government&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Restriction was previously proposed in <strong>2018 and 2021<\/strong>, aims to <strong>conserve energy<\/strong> and <strong>promote public health<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;
