It resulted in the adoption of the <strong>Stockholm Declaration<\/strong> and the <strong>Action Plan for the Human Environment.<\/strong><br>(b). The <strong>United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/strong> designated 5th June of every year as World Environment Day in 1973 to encourage global participation in addressing environmental challenges.<br>&#8211; <strong>World Environment Day 2025:<\/strong><br>1. <strong>Host Country:<\/strong> Republic of Korea<strong>Theme:<\/strong> #BeatPlasticPollution, emphasizing the urgent need to tackle plastic waste and its devastating impact on ecosystems.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plastic Pollution<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Key Facts: <\/strong>Every year <strong>19-23 million tonnes<\/strong> of plastic waste leaks into aquatic ecosystems, polluting lakes, rivers and seas.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped into the world&#8217;s oceans, rivers, and lakes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It costs the world $300-600 billion every year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>7,000 million tonnes of plastic waste generated since 1950.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microplastics are now found in soil, water &amp; food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scale of Plastic Pollution in India: <\/strong>India generates <strong>approx 3.5 million metric tonnes<\/strong> of plastic waste annually.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These plastics end up in the environment, contaminating soil and water sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Without urgent action, plastic pollution is <strong>expected to triple by 2060.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plastic Pollution and Its Impact on SDGs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation):<\/strong> Plastic waste contaminates freshwater sources, harming biodiversity and human health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production):<\/strong> Encourages reducing plastic use, promoting recycling, and adopting sustainable alternatives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SDG 13 (Climate Action):<\/strong> Plastic production and waste contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SDG 14 (Life Below Water):<\/strong> Marine ecosystems suffer from plastic debris, with 85% of marine litter consisting of plastics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SDG 15 (Life on Land):<\/strong> Plastic pollution affects soil health and terrestrial wildlife.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Other Environmental Problems<\/strong>\u00a0<br>&#8211; <strong>Rising Carbon Emissions:<\/strong> Between 2015 and 2024, global CO\u2082 emissions increased by nearly 10%, with India\u2019s emissions surging from 2.33 billion to 3.12 billion metric tonnes.<br>&#8211; <strong>Biodiversity Loss and Deforestation:<\/strong> India\u2019s mega-diverse ecosystems are under threat due to deforestation, wetland degradation, and monoculture agriculture.<br>&#8211; <strong>Severe Pollution Levels:<\/strong> India consistently ranks among the world\u2019s most polluted countries, with Delhi topping global air pollution lists.<br>1. It generates 62 million tonnes of waste annually, but only 20% is scientifically processed.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Global Commitments and India&#8217;s Role<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (2019):<\/strong> India actively supports global efforts to regulate hazardous waste and chemical use.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It opposed e-waste dumping in developing countries and advocated for stricter global rules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>G20 Osaka Blue Ocean Vision (2019)<\/strong>: India and other member countries agreed to take strong action <strong>against plastic pollution.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They committed to <strong>reducing marine plastic litter<\/strong> and microplastics and set a goal to stop adding any new plastic waste to the oceans <strong>by 2050.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (2021):<\/strong> It aims to protect at least 30% of the world\u2019s land and oceans by 2030.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India <\/strong>joined it during the <strong>\u2018One Planet Summit\u2019<\/strong> held in <strong>Paris<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Policy Measures in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plastic Waste Management Rules 2021<\/strong> (under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986), which ban single-use plastic items and regulate plastic carry bags.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Portal,<\/strong> ensuring that manufacturers take responsibility for plastic waste disposal.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EPR means companies that make or sell plastic products must take care of the plastic waste they create.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plastic Parks<\/strong> and<strong> CSIR Technology<\/strong>, which convert plastic waste into fuel and recyclable products.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plastic Parks<\/strong> are specially developed industrial zones where many plastic-related businesses work together in one place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swachh Bharat Mission<\/strong>, promoting rural and urban plastic waste management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solutions for a Plastic-Free Future<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Refuse single-use plastics like straws and cutlery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduce plastic packaging by opting for reusable alternatives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycle responsibly and support businesses that prioritize sustainability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rethink consumption habits by choosing eco-friendly products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a
