Even then, events cannot be held in foreign locations.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accountability and Transparency: <\/strong>Pharmaceutical companies must self-declare adherence to the code and disclose expenditures related to conferences, seminars, and workshops.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enforcement Mechanism: <\/strong>An Ethics Committee for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices (ECPMP) is established within each association to address violations.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Penalties include public reprimand, recovery of benefits given, issuance of corrective statements, and potential legal action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are Freebies?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Freebies also referred to as the <strong>\u201cDoctors\u2019 Comm<\/strong><strong>ission\u201d<\/strong> where pharma companies give out gifts, in cash or kind, to medical professionals <strong>to prescribe their brand of drug.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key concerns associated with this relationship\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Conflict of Interest: <\/strong>Doctors are expected to make medical decisions based on the best interests of patients, and financial or material benefits compromise this objectivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Patient Trust and Confidence: <\/strong>Patients rely on the expertise and unbiased judgment of their doctors, and any perception of undue influence from pharmaceutical companies can undermine this trust.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic Impact on Healthcare Costs: <\/strong>If doctors are influenced to prescribe more expensive medications due to relationships with pharmaceutical companies, it contributes to higher healthcare costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Professional Ethics and Integrity: <\/strong>Medical professionals are expected to adhere to ethical standards that prioritize patient welfare.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accepting gifts or benefits from pharmaceutical companies is perceived as a breach of professional ethics and integrity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recommendations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A five-member committee headed by Vinod K.
