{"id":44046,"date":"2025-05-24T20:41:17","date_gmt":"2025-05-24T15:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=44046"},"modified":"2025-05-24T20:41:29","modified_gmt":"2025-05-24T15:11:29","slug":"virtual-capacity-building-digital-transformation-brics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/24-05-2025\/virtual-capacity-building-digital-transformation-brics","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Capacity Building Session on Digital Transformation in BRICS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus :GS 2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India hosted a Virtual Capacity Building Session on <strong>Digital Transformation in <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/10-01-2025\/indonesia-brics\"><strong>BRICS<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digital Transformation in BRICS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/10-01-2025\/indonesia-brics\"><strong>BRICS countries<\/strong><\/a> have significantly advanced their digital economies by adopting new technologies, fostering digital services, and enacting supportive policies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They now account for <strong>40% of global internet users <\/strong>and <strong>contribute substantially to global ICT goods (30%)<\/strong> and <strong>digitally deliverable services (11%)<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The expansion of BRICS has increased its global share of exports and internet users.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The group now represents <strong>45.2% of the world\u2019s population<\/strong>,<strong> 36.7% of global GDP<\/strong>, and <strong>23.3% of global merchandise trade<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As a result, digital cooperation has become a key part of the BRICS agenda.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Role\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India showcased its flagship <strong>Sanchar Saathi initiative <\/strong>aimed at protecting mobile users from fraud, enhancing transparency, and ensuring equitable access to mobile services.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India and Brazil led presentations on their national approaches to <strong>cyber resilience.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India presented <strong>AADHAAR as a foundational Digital Public Infrastructure<\/strong> (DPI) that has revolutionized public service delivery through<strong> identity-based digital inclusion.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>China also shared insights on its digital infrastructure journey.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India introduced its ambitious <strong>Sangam Digital Twin initiative, <\/strong>aimed at using AI-native, federated platforms to enable scenario-based infrastructure planning and real-time governance solutions.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>China also shared its experiences with Digital Twin technology.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Importance\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/10-01-2025\/indonesia-brics\"><strong>BRICS <\/strong><\/a>has made the integrated implementation of the <strong>2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development <\/strong>a key priority, focusing on its economic, social, and environmental dimensions.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Digital technologies are seen as essential tools to promote inclusive growth and achieve the SDGs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/10-01-2025\/indonesia-brics\"><strong>BRICS <\/strong><\/a>recognises the role of the internet and ICTs in advancing e-governance, financial inclusion, service delivery, and global partnerships.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technologies such as AI and big data are especially valued for their development potential.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agritech and digital agriculture are key focus areas.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It acknowledges digital solutions&#8217; role in boosting agricultural productivity and farmer incomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>BRICS recognises the challenges of rapid digitalisation, including the digital divide, cybersecurity threats, privacy concerns, and the misuse of technologies.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rotating leadership and differing priorities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overcoming to internal disagreements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Know About BRICS<\/strong><br>&#8211; BRICS is an acronym for<strong> five major emerging economies<\/strong> \u2014 Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa \u2014 that came together to promote multilateralism, &amp; inclusive global governance.<br>&#8211; The grouping originally began as BRIC, coined by the <strong>economist Jim O\u2019Neill<\/strong> in 2001, and was formalised through the <strong>first BRIC summit in 2009<\/strong> at Yekaterinburg, Russia.\u00a0<br>&#8211; <strong>Brazil, Russia, India, China (these are founding members)<\/strong>; South Africa joined in 2010; Iran, UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia joined in 2024. Argentina was initially expected to join in 2024 but later opted out.<br>&#8211; BRICS represents over<strong> 41% of the world\u2019s population, about 32% of global GDP (PPP), and nearly 18% of global trade.<\/strong><br>&#8211; A major institutional achievement of BRICS is the <strong>establishment of the New Development Bank (NDB) in 2015<\/strong>, headquartered in Shanghai.
