{"id":43582,"date":"2025-05-17T20:38:16","date_gmt":"2025-05-17T15:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=43582"},"modified":"2025-05-17T20:38:36","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T15:08:36","slug":"nearly-300-million-people-faced-acute-hunger-2024-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/17-05-2025\/nearly-300-million-people-faced-acute-hunger-2024-report","title":{"rendered":"Nearly 300 million people faced acute hunger in 2024: Report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) 2025<\/strong> provides consensus-based analysis on <strong>acute food insecurity, acute malnutrition and population displacement in countries\/territories<\/strong> identified as having<strong> food crises in 2024.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The document is published annually by The <strong>Global Network Against Food Crisis (GNAFC)<\/strong> with analysis from the Food Security Information Network.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GNAFC is an<strong> international alliance of the United Nations, the European Union<\/strong>, governmental and non-governmental agencies working together to address food crises.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It offers insights into immediate and medium-term risks to the food security and nutrition status of populations.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Though, India was not selected among the 53 countries analysed for the report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Terms Related to Food Security<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>Food security<\/strong> exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.\u00a0<br>&#8211; <strong>Acute food insecurity<\/strong> occurs when any of the four pillars of food security \u2014 availability, access, utilization, stability \u2014 is disrupted.<br>&#8211; <strong>A food crisis<\/strong> is when acute food insecurity exceeds national response capacity and requires urgent external aid.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>295 million people across 53 countries<\/strong> faced acute hunger, 13.7 million more than in 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even though there were some<strong> improvements in 15 countries <\/strong>including in Afghanistan, Kenya, and Ukraine,<strong> deteriorating acute food insecurity in 19 others <\/strong>outweighed those improvements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b8dae1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"487\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Nearly-300-million-people-faced-acute-hunger-in-2024-Report.webp\" alt=\"Nearly 300 million people faced acute hunger in 2024\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-43584\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b8dae1; width:413px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Nearly-300-million-people-faced-acute-hunger-in-2024-Report.webp 487w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Nearly-300-million-people-faced-acute-hunger-in-2024-Report-300x265.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Most Severely Affected<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The number of people facing catastrophic hunger <strong>more than doubled between 2023 and 2024, <\/strong>to reach 1.9 million \u2014 the highest on record since the GRFC began tracking in 2016.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High malnutrition rates were recorded in the <strong>Gaza Strip, Mali, Sudan, and Yemen.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Famine<\/strong> has been confirmed in <strong>Sudan<\/strong>, while <strong>other hotspots<\/strong> with people experiencing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity include the <strong>Gaza Strip, South Sudan, Haiti, and Mali.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Major Drivers of the Crisis<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conflict, forced displacement, climate change &amp;
