{"id":42599,"date":"2025-05-02T20:45:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T15:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=42599"},"modified":"2025-05-02T20:45:25","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T15:15:25","slug":"un-pushes-reforms-in-three-key-areas-to-meet-sdgs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/02-05-2025\/un-pushes-reforms-in-three-key-areas-to-meet-sdgs","title":{"rendered":"UN Pushes for Reforms in Three Key Areas to meet SDGs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for urgent action in three key areas to help finance the achievement of the UN-mandated Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With the world facing compounding crises such as economic instability, conflicts, and trade disruptions, progress on the SDGs is lagging.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing nations are spending over<strong> $1.4 trillion<\/strong> annually on debt servicing, limiting their ability to invest in development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hence the UN has outlined <strong>three core areas <\/strong>needing urgent action: <strong>debt reforms, international financial institutions, and diversification of finance sources<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Areas of Reform<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Debt Reforms:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>G20\u2019s Common Framework for Debt Treatments<\/strong> must be accelerated and expanded to include middle-income countries in distress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Credit rating agencies<\/strong> need to revise ratings methodologies that drive up borrowing costs for developing countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The IMF and World Bank<\/strong> must reform debt sustainability assessments to account for SDG-linked investments and climate vulnerabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strengthening International Financial Institutions:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) <\/strong>need<strong> recapitalization<\/strong> and should stretch their balance sheets to increase lending capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MDBs must focus on <strong>mobilizing private finance<\/strong> at affordable rates for developing countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diversifying Finance Sources:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Countries should <strong>mobilise domestic resources<\/strong> to strengthen the health, education and infrastructure sectors.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They should also try to <strong>increase blended finance options<\/strong> in collaboration with the private sector.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Governments must also find ways to effectively <strong>fight corruption to prevent misappropriation of critical funds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is a need to Push for an <strong>inclusive global tax system<\/strong> to ensure fair application of international tax norms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also developed countries must honour their <strong>Official Development Assistance <\/strong>commitments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Global platforms, like the <strong>COP30 Climate Conference in Brazil<\/strong>, will explore innovative climate finance solutions with a target to mobilize<strong> $1.3 trillion<\/strong> annually by 2035.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)<\/strong><br>&#8211;
