It is a non-profit organization launched in<strong> 2020 by India.<\/strong><br>&#8211; It is dedicated to promoting and accelerating the transition to a circular economy both nationally and globally.<br>&#8211; ICCE acts as a think tank, networking platform, and policy influencer, fostering collaboration across industries, governments, academia, and civil society.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Circular Economy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The circular economy (CE) is a model of production that <strong>prioritises waste reduction or elimination at all stages of the product life cycle, <\/strong>from raw materials extraction and manufacturing to disposal and reuse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"343932\" data-has-transparency=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1014\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/04\/What-is-Circular-Economy.png\" alt=\"What is Circular Economy\" class=\"has-transparency wp-image-41934\" style=\"--dominant-color: #343932; width:352px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/04\/What-is-Circular-Economy.png 1014w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/04\/What-is-Circular-Economy-297x300.png 297w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/04\/What-is-Circular-Economy-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/04\/What-is-Circular-Economy-768x776.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1014px) 100vw, 1014px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Core Principles of the Circular Economy:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Products and systems are designed to reduce or eliminate waste from the beginning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Through reuse, repair, remanufacture, and recycling, products are kept in circulation for as long as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The system supports and restores natural resources rather than depleting them\u2014like composting food waste to enrich soil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Benefits:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduces environmental impact and pollution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conserves finite resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stimulates innovation and new business models.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can create new jobs and economic opportunities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Circular Economy Vision and Potential<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s circular economy could generate over<strong> $2 trillion in market value and create up to 10 million jobs by 2050.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Globally, the circular economy could unlock<strong> $4.5 trillion in economic output by 2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has proposed to host the <strong>World Circular Economy Forum in 2026.<\/strong> The 2025 forum will be held in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Opportunities for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High Economic Potential: <\/strong>The growth of India\u2019s circular economy has the potential to drive economic growth, job creation, and innovation focused on sustainability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental and Resource Efficiency: <\/strong>It reduces resource extraction and environmental degradation and also aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Macro and Industry-Level Gains:<\/strong> Transition to the circular economy will enhance systemic efficiency.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It will also support government and industry performance in sustainability benchmarks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fragmented and Inefficient Waste Infrastructure: <\/strong>India lags behind in<strong> <\/strong>capacity across supply chains for waste collection, material recovery, and (re)processing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited Private Sector Incentives: <\/strong>There is a lack of business incentives for the private sector for moving towards a circular economy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Underutilized Informal Sector: <\/strong>Informal waste workers are not integrated into formal systems this leads to inefficiencies, resource leakages, and health risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Key Steps and Commitments<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-U): <\/strong>It strengthens urban waste management, under SBM-U, India has achieved 108.62% success in household toilet construction and\u00a0 80.29% of solid waste in India is being processed successfully.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GOBAR-Dhan Scheme<\/strong>: Promoting waste-to-wealth initiatives through biogas and organic waste processing.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This scheme currently covers 67.8% of the total number of districts in India, with 1008 biogas plants being fully operational.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>E-Waste Management Rules (2022): <\/strong>Strengthening circular economy practices in electronic waste disposal.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For FY 2024-25, the quantity of e-waste collected and recycled stood at 5,82,769 MT and 5,18,240 MT respectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Plastic:<\/strong> Encouraging industries to take accountability for plastic waste.
