{"id":41819,"date":"2025-04-23T19:23:53","date_gmt":"2025-04-23T13:53:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=41819"},"modified":"2025-04-23T19:24:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T13:54:10","slug":"terror-attack-in-pehalgam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/23-04-2025\/terror-attack-in-pehalgam","title":{"rendered":"Terror Attack In Pehalgam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Security<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A terror attack happened in the <strong>Baisaran Valley (meadows)<\/strong> often called <strong>&#8216;mini Switzerland&#8217;,<\/strong> near the town of Pahalgam in the Anantnag district.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba<\/strong>, has claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is TRF?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Resistance Front or TRF <\/strong>was founded in <strong>October 2019<\/strong>, after India bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir, and abrogated Article 370 that gave special status to the erstwhile State.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>MHA banned <\/strong>the outfit under the <strong>Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in 2023.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The front is involved in carrying out propaganda on terror activities, recruitment of terrorists, infiltration of terrorists and smuggling of weapons and narcotics from Pakistan into Jammu and Kashmir.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Militancy in Kashmir Region<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rooted in the 1947 Partition dispute over Kashmir&#8217;s status<\/strong>, armed militancy erupted in the late 1980s, fueled by alleged election rigging and Pakistani support.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>1990s witnessed peak violence<\/strong>, targeting security forces and civilians, including the <strong>Kashmiri Pandit community <\/strong>leading to their exodus, met by intense Indian counter-insurgency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After India revoked<strong> Article 370 in 2019<\/strong>, ending Kashmir&#8217;s special status, a new phase of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir has been seen like targeted killings of minorities and non-locals, &#8220;hybrid&#8221; militants, and increased activity in Jammu&#8217;s Pir Panjal region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reasons For Persistence of Terrorism and Security Challenges in Jammu &amp; Kashmir<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>State-Sponsored Terrorism from Pakistan: <\/strong>Pakistan remains a central driver of terrorism in J&amp;K by providing safe havens, training, funding, and logistical support to militant outfits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Porous Borders and Infiltration Routes:<\/strong> Rugged terrain, forests, and difficult weather conditions. These geographical factors make it challenging for security forces to completely seal borders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Security Thinning due to Strategic Diversion:<\/strong> After the 2020 Galwan clashes, a significant contingent of the Indian Army was repositioned to counter the Chinese threat along the eastern border. This strategic shift has inadvertently weakened the security grid in Jammu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Post-2019 Focus Shift: <\/strong>With a successful security crackdown in the Kashmir Valley post-Article 370 abrogation, terrorist outfits have shifted operations south of the Pir Panjal range\u2014targeting Jammu\u2019s districts like Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, and Kathua.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evolving Tactics of Terrorist Groups: <\/strong>Terrorists operating using forest cover, night vision gear, M4 rifles, and encrypted communications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technological and Operational Challenges: <\/strong>Terrorists use apps like Telegram, TamTam, Chirpwire, Enigma\u2014combined with VPNs, complicating surveillance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communal and Demographic Sensitivities: <\/strong>The religious and ethnic diversity in J&amp;K \u2014 comprising Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and tribal communities \u2014 is vulnerable to communal tension.
