This is due to the presence of:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>12 Major and 200 Minor Ports <\/strong>along the coastline of India,\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Network of more than 20000 kilometres long <strong>navigable 110 waterways <\/strong>connecting around <strong>400 rivers<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are multiple states, union territories and <strong>1300 islands<\/strong> in India which are along the coastline or along the banks of states and interstate rivers or national waterways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>River Cruise Tourism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>River Cruise Tourism is a <strong>form of leisure travel<\/strong> that takes place on rivers and inland waterways using cruise vessels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Key Features <\/strong>of River Cruise Tourism are as;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Short-distance travel:<\/strong> Cruise covers shorter stretches compared to ocean cruises.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Access to interior regions:<\/strong> It connects towns, cities, and villages along rivers, often areas that are not accessible by large ships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural immersion: <\/strong>Tourists experience local traditions, festivals, architecture, and cuisine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Examples:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>2023, MV Ganga Vilas<\/strong>, the world\u2019s longest river cruise, was launched to cover a 3,200-kilometer journey from <strong>Varanasi to Dibrugarh. <\/strong>It traversed 27 river systems across <strong>five Indian states and Bangladesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Houseboats in Kerala <\/strong>in the backwaters of Alappuzha.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"becccf\" data-has-transparency=\"true\" style=\"--dominant-color: #becccf;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"502\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/04\/river-cruise-operations-on-nws.png\" alt=\"river cruise operations on nws\" class=\"has-transparency wp-image-41771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/04\/river-cruise-operations-on-nws.png 502w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/04\/river-cruise-operations-on-nws-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Steps taken by the Indian Government<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cruise Bharat Mission: <\/strong>The \u2018Cruise Bharat Mission\u2019 was launched in 2024, from the Mumbai port.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The programme aims to propel the country&#8217;s cruise tourism industry by doubling cruise passenger traffic within five years;
