{"id":41503,"date":"2025-04-18T20:30:23","date_gmt":"2025-04-18T15:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=41503"},"modified":"2025-04-18T20:30:53","modified_gmt":"2025-04-18T15:00:53","slug":"world-heritage-day-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/18-04-2025\/world-heritage-day-2025","title":{"rendered":"World Heritage Day 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ History and Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>World Heritage Day, also known as the International Monuments and Sites Day, is observed on <strong>18 April<\/strong> every year.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This year&#8217;s theme is \u201c<strong>Heritage under Threat from Disasters and Conflicts: Preparedness and Learning from 60 years of ICOMOS Actions.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>1982<\/strong>, The<strong> International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)<\/strong> proposed that April 18 should be observed as the World Heritage Day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later, the date was approved by the <strong>United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)<\/strong> at the 22nd General Conference in<strong> 1983.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>World Heritage Sites<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>World Heritage<\/strong> is the designation for places on Earth that are of outstanding universal value to humanity and as such, have been inscribed on the World Heritage List to be protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These can be <strong>cultural, natural, or a mix of both.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are protected under an international agreement led by <strong>UNESCO.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The World Heritage Convention, 1972<\/strong> was adopted by UNESCO&#8217;s member countries.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Convention sets out the duties of States Parties in identifying potential sites and their role in protecting and preserving them.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India became part of this Convention in <strong>1977.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"bdad94\" data-has-transparency=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"453\" height=\"453\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/04\/world-heritage-list.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"has-transparency wp-image-41504\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bdad94; The MNIs are officially conserved by the <strong>Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), <\/strong>which functions in accordance with The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 2010 (AMASR Act 2010).<br>&#8211; There are <strong>3697 <\/strong>\u00a0ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains declared as of national importance in the country.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government\u2019s Initiatives to Promote India\u2019s Cultural Heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Retrieval of Antiquities: <\/strong>Archaeological Survey of India is committed to the protection of cultural property.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The government has retrieved <strong>655<\/strong> antiquities from foreign countries from the year <strong>1976 to 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adopt a Heritage\u2019 Scheme:<\/strong> The programme was launched in <strong>2017<\/strong> and revamped as &#8220;Adopt A Heritage 2.0&#8221;
