{"id":38879,"date":"2025-03-10T19:15:49","date_gmt":"2025-03-10T13:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=38879"},"modified":"2025-03-10T19:15:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T13:45:50","slug":"platform-workers-e-shram-registration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/10-03-2025\/platform-workers-e-shram-registration","title":{"rendered":"Platform Workers to Register on e-Shram Portal for Formal Recognition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment has <strong>urged gig and platform workers<\/strong> to register on the <strong>e-Shram portal <\/strong>for <strong>formal recognition<\/strong> and access to benefits under the <strong>Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is witnessing a <strong>gig economy revolution <\/strong>due to its large workforce, rapid urbanization, smartphone penetration, and digital technology adoption.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognizing the contribution of the <strong>gig and platform workers to the nation\u2019s economy<\/strong>, the <strong>Union Budget 2025-26<\/strong> has made the announcement for the provisions of\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>registration of online platform workers on e-Shram portal,\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>issue of identity cards, and\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>healthcare coverage under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AB-PMJAY <\/strong>provides a cover of <strong>Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization<\/strong> across over 31,000 public and private empanelled hospitals in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Gig and Platform economy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Definition:<\/strong> The Gig Economy refers to a labor market characterized by <strong>short-term, flexible jobs <\/strong>where workers are hired on <strong>a contractual or freelance basis<\/strong> rather than traditional full-time employment. These workers, called <strong>gig workers, take up tasks (gigs) <\/strong>on-demand without long-term commitments.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Platform Economy is a <strong>subset of the gig economy <\/strong>where digital platforms (websites, apps like Zomato, Ola etc) connect workers with customers or employers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Projected Growth:<\/strong> NITI Aayog has projected that the gig economy in India will employ over 1 crore workers in 2024-25, subsequently reaching 2.35 Crores by 2029-30.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trend:<\/strong> Medium-skilled jobs are decreasing, while low and high-skilled jobs are increasing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What major challenges Gig workers are facing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lack of job security<\/strong>: no fixed salary or long-term contracts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited social security benefits:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not covered under EPFO, ESIC, or other welfare schemes.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No health insurance, paid leave, or retirement benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unregulated work conditions:<\/strong> Long hours, inconsistent pay, and potential exploitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dependence on platform algorithms:<\/strong> Earnings and visibility depend on platform policies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recommendations for Strengthening the Gig &amp; Platform Economy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Boosting Platform Economy:<\/strong> Launch &#8220;Platform India&#8221; initiative for funding, skilling, and financial inclusion.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Connect street vendors, small businesses to digital platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financial Inclusion: <\/strong>Provide loans without collateral for gig workers.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Priority lending for first-time gig entrepreneurs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skill Development:<\/strong> Government &amp; platform collaboration for training.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Skill certification &amp; career progression for gig workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social Security: <\/strong>Health insurance, accident coverage, paid sick leave.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Retirement plans, income support during low work periods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Initiatives for Gig and Platform Workers<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>Legal Framework for Gig Workers:<\/strong> Code on Social Security, 2020 formally defined:<br>1.
