{"id":38532,"date":"2025-03-05T18:54:07","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T13:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=38532"},"modified":"2025-03-05T18:54:10","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T13:24:10","slug":"women-role-in-india-inclusive-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/05-03-2025\/women-role-in-india-inclusive-growth","title":{"rendered":"Women\u2019s Role in India\u2019s Inclusive Growth\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>S<\/strong><strong>yllabus: GS1\/ Women Empowerment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recently <strong>NITI Aayog<\/strong> launched the report titled &#8220;From Borrowers to Builders: Women\u2019s Role in India\u2019s Financial Growth Story.&#8221;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The report sheds light on the role of women entrepreneurs in shaping India\u2019s economic landscape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Steady Rise in Women Borrowers:<\/strong> Women seeking credit grew three times between 2019 and 2024, reflecting increased demand among female borrowers.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Women Borrower Demographics:<\/strong>\u00a0 About 60% of women borrowers availing credit are from semi-urban or rural areas.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Women under <strong>30 years<\/strong> of age account for only <strong>27%<\/strong> of retail credit uptake by women, compared to <strong>40%<\/strong> for men.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Credit Supply Trends:<\/strong> Women\u2019s participation in credit origination has seen notable growth in recent years. Since 2019, the share of Women in Business Loans and Gold Loans has increased by <strong>14% and 6% <\/strong>respectively.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>By 2024, 42%<\/strong> of loans availed by women were for personal finance, a slight increase from 39% in 2019.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The majority of loans availed by women continue to be against gold \u2013 <strong>36%<\/strong> of all loans availed by women in<strong> 2024<\/strong> were gold loans vs. 19% of loans availed in 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rise in Credit Monitoring and Awareness:\u00a0 <\/strong>As of December 2024, <strong>27 million<\/strong> women borrowers in India have monitored their credit information report and score with CIBIL.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Economic Growth:<\/strong> Women constitute nearly half of India\u2019s population but contribute only <strong>18% <\/strong>to the GDP.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Encouraging women entrepreneurs can increase India\u2019s GDP by <strong>27%<\/strong>, as per IMF estimates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Employment Generation:<\/strong> MSMEs owned by women play a crucial role in job creation and skill development at local levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social Empowerment:<\/strong> It promotes gender equality by demonstrating women\u2019s ability to lead and manage enterprises successfully.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The National Rural Livelihood Mission<\/strong> has enabled<strong> 9 million<\/strong> women<strong> Self Help Groups (SHGs) <\/strong>to improve their livelihoods through access to formal banking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NITI Aayog\u2019s Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP)<\/strong> brings together public and private sector partners to create a supportive ecosystem for women entrepreneurs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The PM SVANidhi Yojana<\/strong> supported 30.6 lakh women street vendors with 5,939.7 crore in working capital loans as of December 2024.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY):<\/strong> In FY 2023-24, loans totaling INR 2.22 lakh crore were disbursed to 4.24 crore women entrepreneurs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges faced by Women Business Borrowers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e5e8e5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"719\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Challenges-faced-by-Women-Business-Borrowers.png\" alt=\"Challenges faced by Women Business Borrowers\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-38533\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e5e8e5;
