{"id":37943,"date":"2025-02-24T18:57:45","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T13:27:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=37943"},"modified":"2025-03-20T17:32:06","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T12:02:06","slug":"india-japan-economy-and-investment-forum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/24-02-2025\/india-japan-economy-and-investment-forum","title":{"rendered":"India-Japan Economy and Investment Forum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India-Japan Economy and Investment Forum was held recently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Concerns Over Trade Surplus:<\/strong> Union Minister Piyush Goyal expressed concerns over Japan&#8217;s growing trade surplus with India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stagnant Exports: <\/strong>India\u2019s exports to Japan have remained stagnant for the past 15 years.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many Japanese investments in India source products from countries like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China, using India mainly as a market for their goods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rising Japanese Exports:<\/strong> Japanese exports to India have consistently increased, worsening the trade imbalance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Focus on Addressing Imbalance:<\/strong> The Union Minister highlighted the need to address this growing disparity in trade between the two countries.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He urged Japanese companies to produce goods and services in India that can be exported to Japan, aiming to balance the trade relationship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief on India and Japan Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Historical and Cultural Ties: <\/strong>Both countries share spiritual and cultural traditions, such as the influence of Hinduism on Japan&#8217;s Seven Lucky Gods and historical connections like the 752 AD consecration of Lord Buddha&#8217;s statue by Indian monk Bodhisena at Todaiji Temple in Japan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Establishment of Relations: <\/strong>After WWII, India opted for a separate Peace Treaty with Japan, signed in 1952, marking the start of formal diplomatic relations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic Synergy: <\/strong>Both nations align on key regional initiatives, such as India\u2019s Act-East Policy, Indo-Pacific vision (SAGAR), and Japan&#8217;s Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade and Investment: <\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Japan is a key ally in India\u2019s economic growth, with FDI from Japan exceeding $43 billion from 2000 to 2024, making it <strong>India&#8217;s fifth-largest source of foreign investment.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2023-24, the country&#8217;s export to Japan was $5.15 billion and imports were $17.7 billion.<strong> The trade gap was $12.55 billion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collaboration on Global Initiatives: <\/strong>Japan and India cooperate in initiatives like the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both countries work together in multilateral frameworks like the Japan-Australia-India-U.S. Quad and the India-Japan-Australia Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integral Defense Partnership: <\/strong>India-Japan defense cooperation is a key pillar of bilateral ties, focused on Indo-Pacific peace, security, and stability.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Key Agreements:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation (2008).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Memorandum of Defense Cooperation (2014).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agreements on Defense Equipment &amp; Technology (2015) and Protection of Classified Military Information (2015).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reciprocal Provision of Supplies and Services Agreement (2020).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exercises and Joint Activities: <\/strong>Maritime Exercise Malabar.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First Bilateral Fighter Exercise, Veer Guardian, in Japan (2023).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First-ever Army-to-Army Exercise Dharma Guardian held in Japan ( 2023).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exercise Shinnyu Maitri between IAF and JASDF.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>JIMEX joint Naval Exercise between two nations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Connectivity Projects in India:<\/strong> The <strong>first High Speed Rail (HSR) corridor <\/strong>is being implemented from Mumbai to Ahmedabad with technical and financial assistance from Japan.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Presently, six Metro Rail projects (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai) are being implemented with technical and financial support from Japan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space Collaboration:<\/strong> ISRO and JAXA collaborate in X-ray astronomy, satellite navigation, lunar exploration, and the Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2016, they signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) for peaceful space exploration and use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trade Imbalance:<\/strong> There is a significant trade imbalance, with Japan exporting more to India than India exports to Japan, creating a need for better reciprocal trade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Geopolitical Tensions:<\/strong> Regional security issues, such as China&#8217;s influence in the Indo-Pacific, pose challenges for India-Japan relations, requiring careful diplomatic balancing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural and Language Barriers:<\/strong> Despite strong ties, differences in language, culture, and business practices pose challenges to deeper integration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited People-to-People Exchanges: <\/strong>The scale of people-to-people interactions is still limited, impacting deeper mutual understanding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure Constraints:<\/strong> Despite improvements, some areas in India still lack the infrastructure necessary to support large-scale Japanese investments effectively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Different Economic Priorities:<\/strong> India\u2019s focus on rapid economic growth may sometimes contrast with Japan&#8217;s emphasis on sustainable development and technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Enhance Trade and Investment: <\/strong>Focus on reducing the trade imbalance by increasing Indian exports to Japan and encouraging Japanese investment in India\u2019s manufacturing and technology sectors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Boost People-to-People Connections: <\/strong>Increase cultural exchanges, tourism, and educational collaborations to deepen mutual understanding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technology and Innovation Partnership: <\/strong>Leverage Japan&#8217;s expertise in technology and India\u2019s growing digital sector to collaborate in AI, robotics, renewable energy, and space exploration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Address Environmental Concerns: <\/strong>Increase cooperation on environmental sustainability, climate change, and disaster resilience to support both countries&#8217;
