However, these monuments are under serious threat due to climate change and human activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Role of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was established in 1861 to protect and maintain historical monuments and sites.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ASI currently oversees 3,698 protected monuments under the <strong>Ancient Monuments Preservation Act (1904)<\/strong> and the <strong>Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act (1958).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ASI\u2019s work includes:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Conservation and Restoration: <\/strong>Regular maintenance of temples, forts, tombs, churches, palaces, and prehistoric sites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Preventive Measures: <\/strong>Addressing threats from climate, pollution, encroachments, and structural instability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Monitoring and Research:<\/strong> Studying the impact of environmental changes on monuments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Legal Enforcement:<\/strong> Ensuring monuments are protected from illegal activities and misuse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Impact of Climate Change on Cultural Heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rising Sea Levels: <\/strong>Coastal heritage sites like the Konark Sun Temple (Odisha) and Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu) are at risk from saltwater intrusion and erosion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extreme Heat and Droughts:<\/strong> Heatwaves and changing weather patterns affect the stability of ancient structures, especially those made from sandstone and limestone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Heavy Rains and Strong Winds:<\/strong> Increased rainfall and cyclones lead to water damage and erosion in forts, palaces, and cave temples.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Air Pollution:<\/strong> Pollution has severely affected monuments like the Taj Mahal, turning its marble yellow due to high sulfur dioxide levels in the air.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Measures to Protect Heritage Sites<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To counter these challenges, the government and ASI have adopted several measures:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c9bebc\" data-has-transparency=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"732\" height=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/02\/measures-to-preserve-culture-sites.png\" alt=\"measures-to-preserve-culture-sites\" class=\"has-transparency wp-image-37414\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c9bebc; width:562px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/02\/measures-to-preserve-culture-sites.png 732w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/02\/measures-to-preserve-culture-sites-300x127.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increased Funding for Conservation:<\/strong> The budget for ASI\u2019s preservation work has increased by 70% in recent years.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2020-21 Allocation: \u20b9260.90 crores<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2023-24 Allocation: \u20b9443.53 crores<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Climate-Resilient Conservation Methods:<\/strong> ASI has adopted scientific preservation techniques to protect monuments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Automated Weather Stations (AWS):<\/strong> Installed in collaboration with ISRO to monitor temperature, wind, rainfall, and atmospheric pressure at heritage sites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Air Pollution Monitoring Labs: <\/strong>Set up near monuments like Taj Mahal (Agra) and Bibi Ka Maqbara (Aurangabad) to track pollution levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collaboration with Other Agencies: <\/strong>ASI works closely with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and UNESCO to develop strategies for disaster management of cultural sites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strengthening Legal Protection:<\/strong> Under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act (1958), monuments are protected from encroachment and misuse.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Section 30 of the 1958 Act <\/strong>imposes heavy fines and legal action against those who damage or deface protected sites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Community Involvement:<\/strong> Local communities should be engaged in conservation efforts to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Public Awareness:<\/strong> Educational programs and campaigns can help people understand the importance of protecting monuments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advanced Technology: <\/strong>Using AI, 3D mapping, and drone surveillance can help in the documentation and restoration of historical sites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stronger Law Enforcement:<\/strong> Stricter laws and harsher penalties for encroachments and defacement must be enforced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: PIB<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India is home to some of the world&#8217;s most iconic historical and cultural sites.
