based on the length of its fibres,<\/strong> as long, medium, or short staple.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gossypium hirsutum,<\/strong> which constitutes roughly 96% of the cotton grown in India, falls in the medium staple category, with fibre lengths ranging from 25 to 28.6 mm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ELS varieties have fibre lengths of 30 mm and above.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most ELS cotton comes from the species Gossypium barbadense, commonly known as E<strong>gyptian or Pima cotton.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It originated in South America, and is mainly grown in <strong>China, Egypt, Australia, and Peru.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Need for the Mission:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is highly import dependent on ELS cotton fibres which are known for its use in making high-quality fabrics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s textile and garment exports<\/strong> have remained stagnant at around $35 billion, while Vietnam and Bangladesh have gained market share, bolstered by free trade agreements (FTAs) and Least Developed Country (LDC) status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Production and Consumption of Cotton in India<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is the only country which <strong>grows all four species Arboreum &amp; G. Herbaceum (Asian cotton), G. Barbadense (Egyptian cotton) and G.
