{"id":36317,"date":"2025-01-28T18:58:44","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T13:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=36317"},"modified":"2025-01-28T18:58:45","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T13:28:45","slug":"india-oman-fta-agreement-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/28-01-2025\/india-oman-fta-agreement-talks","title":{"rendered":"India &#8211; Oman FTA Agreement Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Economy\/GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Commerce and Industry Minister will travel to Oman, to give &#8220;further impetus&#8221; to the<strong> free trade agreement (FTA) <\/strong>talks between India and Oman.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The talks focused on advancing negotiations on the <strong>Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)<\/strong>, strengthening trade and investment ties, and exploring avenues to further deepen bilateral partnership.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FTA: <\/strong>In such agreements, two trading partners either significantly reduce or eliminate customs duties on a maximum number of goods traded between them.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They also ease norms to promote trade in services and attract investments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This visit underscores the importance that India attaches to its trade and investment ties with Oman, one of the important trading partners in the <strong>Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India already has a similar agreement with another GCC member <strong>UAE <\/strong>which came into effect in <strong>2022<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India-Oman Ties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trade Relations:<\/strong> Oman is India\u2019s 30th largest trading partner in FY 2023-2024 with total trade of US$ 8.947 billion.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is among Oman\u2019s top trading partners.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is the 4th largest market for Oman\u2019s crude oil exports for the year 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence Cooperation: <\/strong>India and Oman conduct regular biennial bilateral exercises between all three services.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Army exercise: Al Najah<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Air Force exercise: Eastern Bridge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Naval Exercise: Naseem Al Bahr<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maritime Cooperation: <\/strong>Oman is at the gateway of Strait of Hormuz through which India imports one-fifth of its oil imports.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India signed a pact with the country in 2018 to access the Duqm port of Oman.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Port of Duqm is situated on the southeastern seaboard of Oman, overlooking the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.
