    About Tribal communities\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • Tribal communities have rich traditions, cultures, and heritage, with unique lifestyles and customs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Tribes often live in geographical isolation<\/strong> and are more homogeneous<\/strong> and self-contained compared to non-tribal communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Status In India\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      • Tribes in India are considered to be one of the oldest ethnological groups<\/strong>, often referred to as “Adivasis” (original inhabitants).<\/strong>\n
          \n
        • The term “Adivasi” is recognized internationally, with the International Labour Organization classifying them as “indigenous.”<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • India has the second largest tribal population<\/strong> in the world, with nearly 100 million tribal people (Adivasis).\n
            \n
          • As per the Census 2011<\/strong>, the tribal population constitutes about 8.9% of the total population in India.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Settlement: <\/strong>Northeastern States are home to tribes with distinct ethnicity, and they are generally more isolated from mainstream society.\n
              \n
            • More than 80% of India’s tribes<\/strong> live in the Central and Southern Regions:; <\/strong>these tribes have greater interaction with non-tribal communities compared to northeastern tribes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              – Tribal people have been an integral part of Indian society since the times of the Ramayana and Mahabharata.<\/strong>
              – Tribal movements like the Khasi-Garo, Mizo, and Kol <\/strong>movements are significant chapters in India’s history and the struggle for independence.
              1. Adivasi heroes like Gond Maharani Veer Durgavati,<\/strong> Rani Kamalapati, and the Bhils<\/strong>, who fought alongside Maharana Pratap, played vital roles in the freedom struggle.
              – The Union Government declared November 15, 2021, as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda,<\/strong> recognizing the contribution of tribal communities to India\u2019s freedom movement and nation-building.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

              Government Initiatives for Tribal Development:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
                \n
              • The Government of India has launched several initiatives to improve the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • TRIFED\u00a0 : TRIFED (Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited)<\/strong>\u00a0 was established in 1987 <\/strong>under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to support tribal communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • The Pradhan Mantri Adi Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAAGY)<\/strong> aims to provide basic infrastructure in villages with a significant tribal population.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • The Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN)<\/strong>, launched in 2023, to improve the socio-economic conditions of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • National Tribal Health Conclave : <\/strong>It is organized by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW).\n

                • It is part of the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan<\/strong> aimed at improving the health and well-being of India\u2019s tribal communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • National Sickle Cell Elimination Mission<\/strong> launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to eradicate sickle cell anemia by 2047.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • Bhagwan Birsa Munda Chair of Tribal Health and Haematology<\/strong> established at AIIMS Delhi for research on tribal health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • Constitutional Provisions for Tribals: <\/strong>The Indian Constitution includes special provisions for the protection of tribal communities, their culture, and development.\n

                  • Funds are allocated to states<\/strong> under Article 275(1<\/strong>) of the Constitution to promote tribal welfare and development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                    Challenges:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
                      \n
                    • Indian tribal communities face several challenges, including preserving their cultural heritage,<\/strong> addressing economic and social disparities, <\/strong>and protecting their rights and resources.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • Many tribes face poverty<\/strong>, limited access to education, healthcare, and unemployment.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • Discrimination<\/strong>, lack of representation in decision-making, and loss of traditional knowledge further exacerbate their vulnerabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                      Conclusion and Way Forward\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
                        \n
                      • Tribal areas are largely underdeveloped and home to a significant portion of India’s population.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                      • To promote their well-being, it is essential to respect and understand their cultural heritage, recognize their traditional knowledge and practices, and involve them in decisions regarding their lands and resources.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                      • Government policies and initiatives are crucial for addressing these challenges and preserving their unique cultural identity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                      • And a comprehensive plan is needed to enhance healthcare delivery in tribal regions, addressing their unique challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
