Indian Diaspora"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/ Indian Diaspora<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PM Modi inaugurated the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Odisha.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention<\/strong> is the flagship event of the Government of India that provides an important platform to connect and engage with the Indian diaspora and enable them to interact with each other.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Theme: <\/strong>&#8220;Diaspora\u2019s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat\u201d.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Indian Diaspora<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As of May 2024, there were around <strong>35.42 million<\/strong> people of Indian origin living outside of India, making it the world&#8217;s largest diaspora.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This includes around<strong> 15.85 million<\/strong> non-resident Indians (NRIs) and <strong>19.57 million <\/strong>people of Indian origin (PIOs).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The<strong> United <\/strong><strong>States<\/strong> has the largest Indian population in the world, with over <strong>5 million <\/strong>people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pravasi Bharatiya Divas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PBD, also known as Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Day, is celebrated on <strong>January 9.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The day also commemorates the <strong>return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa <\/strong>to India in <strong>1915.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was <strong>first celebrated in 2003<\/strong> and its format was later revised in 2015 to celebrate the event <strong>once every two years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who are Girmitiyas?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Girmitiyas were indentured laborers from British India who were transported to work on plantations in the<strong> 19th and early 20th centuries.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Girmitiyas were sent to countries like Fiji, Mauritius, Seychelles, R\u00e9union, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, British Guiana (now Guyana), Suriname, Malaysia, and Kenya.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The laborers signed a <strong>contract called a Girmit<\/strong>, which bound them to work for a single employer at a fixed wage for a fixed period of <strong>three\u2013five years.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Contribution of Indian Diaspora<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cultural Diplomacy:<\/strong> It strengthens India&#8217;s cultural ties with the global community and promotes the richness of Indian heritage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic Contributions:<\/strong> The diaspora plays a critical role in remittances and investments that contribute to India&#8217;s economic growth.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India received<strong> $125 billion<\/strong> in remittances in 2023, which accounted for <strong>3.4%<\/strong> of the country&#8217;s GDP.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Entrepreneurship: <\/strong>A growing number of Indian professionals are returning from abroad to <strong>establish startups <\/strong>in India, leveraging their international experience to drive innovation and economic growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Political Influence: <\/strong>The Indian diaspora exerts political influence through lobbying efforts, advocating for policies that strengthen bilateral relations and benefit India&#8217;s strategic interests.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concluding remarks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas highlights the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora to India&#8217;s development.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It strengthens global ties and reinforces India&#8217;s vision for a &#8220;Viksit Bharat,&#8221;
