notification to this effect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recently, the Union Cabinet has granted classical language status to <strong>Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali,<\/strong> increasing the classical languages to <strong>eleven.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Classical Languages<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India had six classical languages<\/strong> \u2014 Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tamil was declared a classical language in <strong>2004<\/strong>, Sanskrit in <strong>2005<\/strong>, Kannada in <strong>2008<\/strong>, Telugu in <strong>2008<\/strong>, Malayalam in <strong>2013<\/strong>, and Odia in <strong>2014<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All the Classical Languages are listed in the <strong>Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Criteria: <\/strong>It should have <strong>high antiquity<\/strong> of its early texts\/recorded history over a period of 1,500-2,000 years,\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a body of ancient literature or texts that is considered a valuable heritage by generations of speakers,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the presence of \u201cknowledge texts\u201d, especially prose texts in addition to poetry, epigraphical and inscriptional evidence,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the said language and literature should be distinct from its modern format.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Benefits:<\/strong> The Education Ministry provides certain benefits to promote it such as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>two major annual international awards for scholars of eminence in the said
