{"id":32982,"date":"2024-11-30T18:03:24","date_gmt":"2024-11-30T12:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=32982"},"modified":"2024-11-30T18:03:26","modified_gmt":"2024-11-30T12:33:26","slug":"accelerated-degree-programme-adp-and-extended-degree-programme-edp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/30-11-2024\/accelerated-degree-programme-adp-and-extended-degree-programme-edp","title":{"rendered":"Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP) and Extended Degree Programme (EDP)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently approved a Standard Operating Protocol (SOP) for Higher education institutions (HEIs) to offer the <strong>Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP) and Extended Degree Programme (EDP).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are ADPs and EDPs?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At the end of the<strong> first or second semester<\/strong>, but not beyond, undergraduate students will be allowed to opt for an <strong>ADP or an EDP<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students enrolled under an ADP will follow the same curriculum and must earn the same <strong>number of credits <\/strong>as required for a <strong>three- or four-year undergraduate (UG) programme<\/strong>. However, they can <strong>complete their programme sooner <\/strong>by earning additional credits starting from the semester they choose the ADP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Under ADP<\/strong>, a three-year UG programme can be completed in <strong>five semesters<\/strong> instead of the standard six (shortened by a maximum of one semester), while a four-year UG programme can be completed in <strong>six or seven semesters <\/strong>(shortened by a maximum of two semesters) rather than eight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the other hand, <strong>students who choose the<\/strong> <strong>EDP <\/strong>will be allowed to earn <strong>fewer credits per semester <\/strong>compared to the standard programme, allowing them to take longer to complete their course.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The government departments, private organisations, and recruiting agencies like <strong>UPSC\/State Service Commissions <\/strong>and so on, will treat the ADPs and EDPs on a par with those of standard duration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How will they be implemented?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HEIs will set up the <strong>committee <\/strong>to scrutinise the applications they receive for ADP and EDP at the end of the first or second semester and select students accordingly.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An institution can earmark <strong>up to<\/strong> <strong>10%<\/strong> of the sanctioned intake for ADP students, while there will be <strong>no cap<\/strong> on the number of EDP students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HEIs can begin offering ADP or EDP from the <strong>2025-26 academic year<\/strong>, with the choice to implement these programs left to the institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ADP allows high-performing students to complete their degrees faster and allows them to enter the <strong>workforce or pursue higher studies<\/strong> sooner.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The move was in line with the <strong>National Credit Framework (NCrF) <\/strong>released last year in accordance with the<strong> National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>University Grants Commission (UGC)<\/strong><br>&#8211; It came into existence on 28th December, 1953 and became a <strong>statutory Organization<\/strong> of the Government of India by an <strong>Act of Parliament in 1956.<\/strong><br>&#8211; The UGC&#8217;s <strong>mandate<\/strong> includes:<br> 1. Promoting and coordinating university education.<br> 2. Determining and maintaining standards of teaching, examination, and research in universities.<br> 3. Disbursing grants to the Universities and Colleges.<br> 4. Serving as a vital link between the Union and State Governments and institutions of higher learning.<br> 5.
