{"id":32621,"date":"2024-11-23T17:43:43","date_gmt":"2024-11-23T12:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=32621"},"modified":"2024-11-23T17:43:44","modified_gmt":"2024-11-23T12:13:44","slug":"reducing-dependence-on-the-import-of-the-coking-coal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/23-11-2024\/reducing-dependence-on-the-import-of-the-coking-coal","title":{"rendered":"Reducing Dependence on the Import of the Coking Coal\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Niti Ayog has released the report <strong>\u2018Enhancing Domestic Coking Coal Availability to Reduce the import of Coking Coal\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Findings\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Resources of Coking Coal:<\/strong> As of 2023, India\u2019s proved geological resources of prime coking coal and medium coking coal are estimated to be 5.13 BT and 16.5 BT, respectively.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Imports:<\/strong> During the last five years, coking coal imports accounted for <strong>22 &#8211; 27%<\/strong> of the total coal imported into India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The total value of coking coal imports into India crossed Rs. 1 trillion for the first time in FY 2021-22.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Australia supplied<strong> 54% of India\u2019s coking<\/strong> coal imports in FY 2022-23.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Volatile Prices:<\/strong> The prices of coking coal are highly volatile due to the dominance of a few countries (mainly, Australia).\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Share in Cost of Steel Production:<\/strong> Coking coal accounted for approximately <strong>42% of the cost of steel produced in India<\/strong>, the Ministry of Steel is making efforts to reduce the import bill on coking coal by diversifying the import sources.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/07-10-2024\/india-u-s-sign-mou-on-critical-minerals-supply-chains\"><strong>Critical Mineral<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>NITI Aayog can convince the Government to <strong>declare coking coal as a \u2018critical mineral\u2019 for India<\/strong> for ramping up the production of domestic metallurgical coal to enhance the competitiveness of India\u2019s booming steel sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Importance of Coking Coal for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coking coal, also known as <strong>metallurgical coal or &#8220;met coal,&#8221;<\/strong> is a type of coal that is used in the <strong>steelmaking process.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s <strong>essential in the production of coke,<\/strong> a key component in the steelmaking process.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coking coal needs to have <strong>specific properties such as high carbon content, low sulfur and phosphorus conte<\/strong><strong>nt,<\/strong> and strong coking properties to be suitable for steelmaking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Import dependency :\u00a0 : <\/strong>India remains one of the world&#8217;s largest importers of coking coal, importing from countries like Australia, the U.S., Indonesia, Mozambique, and Russia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High Demand from Steel Mills: <\/strong>The rise in imports is driven by strong demand from India\u2019s steel mills, which are the largest consumers of coking coal, a key raw material in steel-making.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coking Coal Shortages: <\/strong>Indian steel companies, which consume about 70 million metric tons of coking coal annually, are facing shortages and high prices.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Steps\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is targeting a <strong>20% increase in coking coal production, <\/strong>aiming for 80 million tonnes (mt) in FY25, up from 66.55 mt last year, as part of efforts to reduce its coking coal import bill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The government has launched <strong>&#8216;Mission Coking Coal&#8217; in August, 2021<\/strong> to suggest a roadmap to augment the production and utilization of domestic coking coal in India by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Suggestions and Way Ahead\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coking coal is vital for India&#8217;s steel industry and economic growth.
