{"id":32618,"date":"2024-11-23T17:43:21","date_gmt":"2024-11-23T12:13:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=32618"},"modified":"2024-11-23T17:43:22","modified_gmt":"2024-11-23T12:13:22","slug":"china-india-state-of-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/23-11-2024\/china-india-state-of-play","title":{"rendered":"China-India State of Play"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus:<\/strong><strong> GS2\/International Relations; India and its Neighbour<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recent developments have highlighted the delicate balance trying to maintain in the relationship between China and India which is complex and multifaceted, marked by cooperation and conflict by both countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Historical Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The China-India relationship has been historically strained, primarily due to border disputes.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The most notable conflict <strong>occurred in 1962<\/strong>, and tensions have periodically flared up since then, most recently with the <strong>Galwan Valley clash in 2020<\/strong>, which resulted in casualties on both sides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since then, both countries have engaged in numerous rounds of diplomatic and military talks to de-escalate the situation, but with limited success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Line of Actual Control (LAC)<\/strong><br>&#8211; The LAC is the demarcation that separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory.<br>&#8211; India considers the LAC to be 3,488 km long, while the Chinese consider it to be only around 2,000 km.<br>&#8211; It is divided into<strong> three sectors:\u00a0<\/strong><br>1. the <strong>eastern sector <\/strong>which spans Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim;<br>2. the <strong>middle sector <\/strong>in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh,and;<br>3. the <strong>western sector <\/strong>in Ladakh.<br>&#8211; LAC in the eastern sector consisting of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim is called the <strong>McMahon Line<\/strong> which is 1,140 km long.<br><strong>Major friction points along the India-China border<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>Depsang Plains:<\/strong> This area is located in the northernmost part of Ladakh and has seen incursions by Chinese troops in the past.<br>&#8211; <strong>Demchok:<\/strong> This area is located in eastern Ladakh and has seen disputes over the boundary between India and China.<br>&#8211; <strong>Pangong Lake: <\/strong>This area has been a major flashpoint between the two countries, with Chinese troops attempting to change the status quo on the LAC in the region.<br>&#8211; <strong>Gogra and Hot Springs:<\/strong> These two areas are located in eastern Ladakh and have seen standoffs between Indian and Chinese troops in recent years.<br>&#8211; <strong>Arunachal Pradesh:<\/strong> This northeastern Indian state is claimed by China as part of its territory and has been a major point of contention between the two countries.<br><strong>How is the LAC different from the Line of Control with Pakistan?<\/strong><br>&#8211; The LoC emerged from the 1948 ceasefire line negotiated by the UN after the Kashmir War.<br>&#8211; It was designated as the LoC in 1972, following the Shimla Agreement between the two countries. It is delineated on a map signed by DGMOs of both armies and has the international sanctity of a legal agreement.<br>&#8211; The LAC, is only a concept and it is not agreed upon by the two countries, neither delineated on a map or demarcated on the ground.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d6d3c3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/11\/disputed-areas.webp\" alt=\"Disputed Areas\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-32619\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d6d3c3; width:550px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/11\/disputed-areas.webp 1000w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/11\/disputed-areas-300x199.webp 300w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/11\/disputed-areas-768x510.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recent Diplomatic Engagements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The recent meeting of heads of states of <strong>India and China<\/strong> on the sidelines of the <strong>BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, <\/strong>marking their <strong>first bilateral talks in five years.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both leaders emphasised the importance of <strong>maintaining peace along the LAC<\/strong> and agreed on the need for <strong>mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity <\/strong>in their interactions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The recent agreement, as reported, involves the <strong>restoration of patrolling rights<\/strong> in the <strong>Depsang Plains and Demchok in Ladakh,<\/strong> areas that have been flashpoints in the ongoing conflict.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is seen as a <strong>first concrete step<\/strong> towards restoring the <strong>pre-2020 status quo ante. <\/strong>Additionally, agreements have been reached in other sectors along the LAC, including Arunachal Pradesh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Border Stability: <\/strong>The situation along the India-China border remains a critical issue. Despite recent diplomatic engagements, the border situation is described as \u2018generally stable\u2019 but still requires careful management.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both countries have agreed to put the boundary issue in an \u2018appropriate position\u2019 and promote its transition to \u2018normalised management\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic and Strategic Interests: <\/strong>Beyond the border disputes, China and India have significant economic and strategic interests that necessitate cooperation.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both countries are key members of the <strong><em>BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)<\/em><\/strong>, and their cooperation is vital for regional stability and economic growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It opens up diplomatic space for India as it navigates its relationships with major global powers, including Russia and the West.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Political Engagement:<\/strong> A potential meeting between Indian Prime Minister and Chinese President on the sidelines of the <strong>Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)<\/strong> summit could further solidify this agreement and outline future political and economic engagements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Implementation:<\/strong> The disengagement process must be followed by de-escalation and de-induction, which will be a slow and complex process requiring constant vigilance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trust Deficit: <\/strong>The relationship between India and China has been marred by a significant trust deficit. Building confidence and ensuring compliance with the agreement will be critical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Broader Issues: <\/strong>The border issue is just one aspect of the complex India-China relationship.
