{"id":32236,"date":"2024-11-16T19:01:08","date_gmt":"2024-11-16T13:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=32236"},"modified":"2025-07-12T12:16:38","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T06:46:38","slug":"guru-nanak-jayanti-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-11-2024\/guru-nanak-jayanti-2","title":{"rendered":"Guru Nanak Jayanti"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/ HIstory and Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recently, the <strong>555th<\/strong> birth anniversary of Guru Nanak was celebrated across India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Guru Nanak is the <strong>founder of Sikhism<\/strong> and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He lived in the <strong>15th century <\/strong>and was the contemporary of the Mughal Emperor &#8211; <strong>Babur.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His teachings are encapsulated in the <strong>Guru Granth Sahib<\/strong> (the holy scripture of Sikhism), and continue to hold great relevance in contemporary times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key teachings of Guru Nanak<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Religious Tolerance: <\/strong>In an era marked by religious diversity, Guru Nanak&#8217;s emphasis on the unity of all people under one divine force encourages mutual respect and harmony.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>This teaching promotes religious tolerance and understanding, <\/strong>which is especially relevant in today&#8217;s globalized and diverse world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Equality and Social Justice:<\/strong> Guru Nanak strongly advocated for social equality, rejecting caste-based discrimination and promoting the idea that all individuals are equal.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This teaching remains relevant in the contemporary context where issues of social justice, discrimination, and inequality persist.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Service to Humanity: <\/strong>The concept of<strong> &#8220;seva&#8221; or selfless service <\/strong>is central to Sikhism. Guru Nanak encouraged his followers to engage in acts of kindness and service to humanity.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This teaching is <strong>relevant in addressing the challenges of poverty, inequality,<\/strong> and humanitarian crises that persist in the modern world.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He set up rules for congregational worship (Sangat) involving collective recitation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Honest Livelihood: <\/strong>Guru Nanak emphasized the importance of earning an honest living through hard work and ethical means.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the contemporary world, where issues of corruption, dishonesty, and unethical practices are prevalent, <strong>Guru Nanak&#8217;s teachings<\/strong> encourage individuals to maintain integrity in their professional and personal lives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spiritual Unity: <\/strong>He advocated the <strong>\u2018Nirguna\u2019 <\/strong>(devotion to and worship of formless divine) form of bhakti.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This teaching<strong> encourages individuals to find commonalities and connections between different faiths and traditions<\/strong>, fostering a sense of unity and shared humanity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental Stewardship:<\/strong> Guru Nanak&#8217;s teachings emphasize the interconnectedness of all creation and the importance of respecting and preserving the environment.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the face of contemporary environmental challenges, these teachings <strong>inspire a sense of responsibility towards nature <\/strong>and sustainable living.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legacy of Guru Nanak<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nankana Sahib: <\/strong>A Gurudwara was built at his birthplace in the city now known as Nankana Sahib.
