{"id":31950,"date":"2024-11-09T18:57:04","date_gmt":"2024-11-09T13:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=31950"},"modified":"2024-11-09T18:57:05","modified_gmt":"2024-11-09T13:27:05","slug":"sc-verdict-on-amus-minority-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/09-11-2024\/sc-verdict-on-amus-minority-status","title":{"rendered":"SC Verdict on\u00a0 AMU\u2019s Minority Status"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS 2\/Governance<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Supreme Court ruled that an institution founded by a minority community retains its minority status even when recognized by statute.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Case Background<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The judgment was in response to petitions seeking minority status for Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AMU&#8217;s minority status, established in 1875, was restored by the AMU (Amendment) Act in 1981.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Petitioners challenged the <strong>1967 S. Azeez Basha v. Union of India case<\/strong>, which had held that AMU could not be considered a minority institution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Supreme Court&#8217;s Observations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chief Justice D.Y.
