{"id":31677,"date":"2024-11-04T18:07:28","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T12:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=31677"},"modified":"2024-11-04T18:07:30","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T12:37:30","slug":"indias-updated-national-biodiversity-strategy-and-action-plan-nbsap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/04-11-2024\/indias-updated-national-biodiversity-strategy-and-action-plan-nbsap","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Biodiversity and Conservation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India launched the updated<strong> National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2024-2030<\/strong>, at the <strong>COP 16 <\/strong>to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Highlights of NBSAP<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has updated the NBSAP to align with the <strong>Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) <\/strong>establishing the <strong>National Biodiversity Targets (NBTs)<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It outlines<strong> 23 National Biodiversity Targets<\/strong> focused on <strong>reducing threats<\/strong> to biodiversity, ensuring sustainable use of resources, and enhancing tools for implementation.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each target is linked to specific strategies aimed at promoting ecosystem resilience, species recovery, and sustainable management practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Implementation:<\/strong> The MoEFCC serves as the central agency responsible for coordinating biodiversity conservation efforts across India.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The CBD is a <\/strong>part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), came into being in <strong>1993<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It has three major objectives<\/strong>\u2014conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of the components of biological diversity, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GBF was adopted by the <strong>COP15 <\/strong>to the <strong>Convention on Biological Diversity in 2022.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has been promoted as a &#8220;<strong>Paris Agreement for Nature&#8221;.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The GBF contains <strong>4 global goals and 23 targets.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Among the twenty-three targets <\/strong>to be achieved by<strong> 2030 <\/strong>include halving the introduction of invasive species, and $500 billion\/year reduction in harmful subsidies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8220;Target 3&#8221;<\/strong> is especially referred to as the <strong>&#8220;30X30&#8221; target.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8217;30X30&#8242; target<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Under it, delegates committed to protecting <strong>30% of land and 30% of coastal and marine areas by 2030,<\/strong> fulfilling the deal\u2019s highest-profile goal, known as 30-by-30.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The deal also aspires to <strong>restore 30% of degraded lands and waters<\/strong> throughout the decade, up from an earlier aim of <strong>20%.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, the world will strive to prevent destroying intact landscapes and areas with a lot of species, bringing those losses <strong>\u201cclose to zero by 2030\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Outcomes of Cop 16<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cali Fund: <\/strong>It is a multilateral mechanism, including a global fund, to share the benefits from uses of <strong>digital sequence information (DSI) on genetic resources more fairly and equitably.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It will be <strong>non-binding <\/strong>(voluntary) where firms are expected to contribute 1% of their profit or 0.1% of their revenue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indigenous People and Local Communities:<\/strong> A new Programme that sets out specific tasks to ensure the meaningful contribution of indigenous peoples and local communities towards the three objectives of the Convention was adopted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Synthetic biology<\/strong>: An expert group will guide identification of synthetic biology\u2019s potential benefits and review the potential impacts of recent technological developments.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Invasive Alien Species:<\/strong> It proposes guidelines for managing invasive alien species, touching on issues such as e-commerce, multicriteria analysis methodologies and others.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Biodiversity and Health:<\/strong> A Global Action Plan on Biodiversity and Health designed to help curb the emergence of zoonotic diseases, and prevent non-communicable diseases, it embraces a holistic \u201cOne Health\u201d approach.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Risk Assessment: <\/strong>Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety welcomed new, voluntary guidance on assessing the risks posed by living modified organisms (LMOs) containing engineered gene drives.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are voluntary in nature, individual countries can tailor them to national contexts, considering ecological variables unique to their environments.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2070401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>PIB<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India launched the updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2024-2030, at the COP 16 to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-31677","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-affairs"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31677","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=31677"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31677\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":31678,"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31677\/revisions\/31678"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=31677"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=31677"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=31677"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
