class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Index is published by international non-governmental organisation Oxfam and Development Finance International (DFI), measuring <strong>164 countries\u2019 commitment to reducing inequality.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The<strong> fifth edition<\/strong> of the index ranked countries on their policies regarding <strong>public services spending<\/strong> (education, health and social protection), progressive taxation, and labour rights and wages .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nine out of ten countries <\/strong>are implementing policies and actions likely to increase economic inequality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Major Cuts: 84 percent of countries<\/strong> have cut investment in education, health and social protection, <strong>81 percent weakened<\/strong> their tax systems\u2019 ability to reduce inequality, and in <strong>90 percent of them<\/strong>, labour rights and minimum wages have worsened.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The top performers<\/strong>: These are all high-income countries, led by Norway, Canada, Australia, Germany and Finland.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>L<strong>abour policies: <\/strong>These countries start from much lower wage inequality.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They have<strong> high social spending and collect more tax revenue<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Belarus, Costa Rica and South Africa <\/strong>are at the best-performing among the low- and middle-income countries.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The worst performers: <\/strong>They are low- and lower middle-income countries, all situated in sub-Saharan Africa (South Sudan, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Central African Republic, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Burundi).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"97b6bb\" inequality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prioritize public spending on essential public services such as education, healthcare and social protection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increase progressive taxation by taxing the income of the richest 1%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intervene in the labour market to protect all workers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop gender-responsive policies to recognize, reduce and redistribute unpaid care work and ensure that paid care workers are represented and rewarded justly.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a
