{"id":31373,"date":"2024-10-25T17:37:31","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T12:07:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=31373"},"modified":"2024-10-25T17:37:32","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T12:07:32","slug":"emissions-gap-report-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/25-10-2024\/emissions-gap-report-2024","title":{"rendered":"Emissions Gap Report 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Environmental Impact Assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Emissions Gap Report,<\/strong> an annual publication of the UN Environment Programme, has been released.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is UNEP&#8217;s spotlight report launched<strong> annually<\/strong> <strong>in advance of the annual Climate negotiations.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It<strong> tracks the gap<\/strong> between where global emissions are heading with current country commitments and where they ought to be to limit warming to 1.5\u00b0C.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each edition <strong>explores ways to bridge the emissions gap.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report assessed countries\u2019<strong> Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs),<\/strong> which they are <strong>required to update every five years, <\/strong>to determine how much the world might warm if these plans were fully implemented.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>About The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)<\/strong><br>&#8211; It is the <strong>leading environmental authority<\/strong> in the United Nations system established in<strong> 1972.<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>The UN Environment Assembly<\/strong> is the policy-making organ of UNEP.<br>&#8211; <strong>Headquarter:<\/strong> Nairobi, Kenya.<br>&#8211; <strong>Major Reports:<\/strong> Global Environment Outlook, The Rise of Environmental Crime Report, Actions on Air Quality, Frontiers Report, Adaptation Gap Report.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1.5 Degree Target:<\/strong> It warned that the Paris Agreement objective of keeping global rise in temperatures to within 1.5 degree Celsius would be gone within a few years.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The bare minimum required to keep the 1.5 degree target in sight was <strong>42 percent reduction<\/strong>. The reductions must <strong>increase to 57 percent by 2035<\/strong> to keep the target alive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global emissions in 2023<\/strong> was 1.3 percent higher than the previous year.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Greenhouse gas emissions of China and India<\/strong>, two of the top three emitters, grew by 5.2 percent and 6.1 percent respectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Future Predictions: Current climate actions,<\/strong> even in the most optimistic scenario, could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by only<strong> 10 percent by 2030 on 2019 levels.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The 2 degree Celsius threshold<\/strong> would be in danger of being breached, unless countries dramatically scale up their climate actions to reduce global emissions in two years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Without dramatic cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, the world could face an inevitable<strong> 3.1\u00b0C temperature rise<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"556c70\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Recommendations:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is a need for a massive increase in investment in emissions reductions.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boosting<strong> solar photovoltaic and wind energy<\/strong> usage could contribute 27 percent of the total reduction in 2030 and 38 percent by 2035.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additionally, forest conservation could provide around 20 percent of the necessary reductions in both years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other effective strategies include enhancing energy efficiency, electrifying various sectors and transitioning from fossil fuels in buildings, transport and industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs) Goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India seeks to achieve following targets by 2030:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Emission Reduction:<\/strong> India aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by<strong> 45% by 2030<\/strong>, compared to 2005 levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Renewable Energy: <\/strong>The country seeks to achieve <strong>50%<\/strong> of its energy needs from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, with a target of installing 500 GW of renewable energy capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carbon Sink: <\/strong>India plans to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through afforestation and reforestation efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a
