{"id":31269,"date":"2024-10-23T18:09:57","date_gmt":"2024-10-23T12:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=31269"},"modified":"2024-10-23T18:10:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T12:40:00","slug":"cop-16-of-convention-on-biological-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/23-10-2024\/cop-16-of-convention-on-biological-diversity","title":{"rendered":"COP 16 of Convention on Biological Diversity\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 16) will be held in <strong>Cali, Colombia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Convention on Biological Diversity\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Origin:<\/strong> The Convention was opened for signature in<strong> 1992<\/strong> at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (<strong>Rio Earth Summit).<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) entered into force on <strong>29 December 1993.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u00a0The first session of the COP <\/strong>was scheduled in<strong> 1994 in the Bahamas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Secretariat: <\/strong>Montreal, Canada.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ratification:<\/strong> The CBD has been ratified by <strong>196 nations<\/strong>, making it one of the most widely adopted international treaties.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The United States<\/strong> is the only UN member state that has <strong>not ratified<\/strong> the convention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It has 3 main objectives;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The conservation of biological diversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sustainable use of the components of biological diversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Governing body<\/strong> is the Conference of the Parties (COP), which <strong>meets every two<\/strong> <strong>years.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Supplementary Agreements of CBD<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety: <\/strong>This international treaty governs the transboundary movements of <strong>living modified organisms (LMOs)<\/strong> resulting from modern biotechnology, ensuring that countries can manage risks associated with biotechnology.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It was adopted in 2000 <\/strong>and entered into force in <strong>2003.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nagoya Protocol: <\/strong>This agreement focuses on <strong>Access to Genetic Resources<\/strong> and the <strong>Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits<\/strong> arising from their utilization (ABS), aimed at ensuring that benefits derived from genetic resources are shared fairly with the countries of origin.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was adopted in 2010 and entered into force in <strong>2014.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework<\/strong><br>&#8211; The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was concluded at COP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held in <strong>Montreal, Canada, in 2022.\u00a0<\/strong><br>&#8211; This framework is a landmark agreement aimed at addressing the global biodiversity crisis.<br>&#8211;
