{"id":31149,"date":"2024-10-21T18:07:19","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T12:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=31149"},"modified":"2024-10-21T18:07:20","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T12:37:20","slug":"indias-sports-culture-and-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/21-10-2024\/indias-sports-culture-and-challenges","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s Sports Culture and Challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Governance&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports said that <strong>India is set to become one among the top ten performing countries<\/strong> in the world in the field of sports.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Sports Landscape<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Traditional games<\/strong> like wrestling, kabaddi, archery, and various forms of martial arts were not just physical activities but also cultural rituals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>During the colonial era,<\/strong> the British introduced modern sports like cricket, football, hockey, and tennis to India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As a result, infrastructure for these sports began to develop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Post-independence,<\/strong> India witnessed unsteady growth in sports infrastructure.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>However, the pace of development remained relatively slow, and the infrastructure was limited primarily to a few metropolitan areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>During the late 20th and the early 21st century<\/strong> India started recognizing the importance of sports infrastructure in nurturing talent.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India hosted major international events such as the <strong>Asian Games in 1982 <\/strong>and the <strong>Cricket World Cup in 1987, <\/strong>which necessitated the construction of world-class sporting infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over time, with the <strong>advent of technology,<\/strong> the approach towards sports infrastructure underwent a remarkable transformation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Performance in International Events<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Paris Olympics<\/strong> ended with India securing<strong> six medals <\/strong>\u2014 one silver and five bronze \u2014 to place<strong> 71st in the medals tally<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was ranked below nations with much smaller populations including <strong>Georgia, Kazakhstan and North Korea.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The United States,<\/strong> with less than a quarter of India\u2019s population, topped the charts with <strong>126 medals followed by China with 91.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has now won just <strong>41 Olympic medals<\/strong> in total since its debut in <strong>1900<\/strong>, all at the Summer Games.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The country\u2019s performance led to <strong>many questions about the need for a sporting culture.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reasons for the Lack of success by Indian Athletes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lack of Infrastructure and Training Facilities: <\/strong>While improvements have been made, many areas still lack quality sports infrastructure and training facilities, access to modern training equipment and coaching is essential for developing elite athletes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Insufficient Funding: <\/strong>Many athletes struggle to secure adequate funding, which limits their training opportunities and participation in international competitions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Focus on Popular Sports: <\/strong>The overwhelming focus on cricket often overshadows other sports, leading to a lack of resources and attention for disciplines like athletics, swimming, and others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of Grassroots Development: <\/strong>There\u2019s a need for a stronger grassroots sports culture that identifies and nurtures talent from a young age.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Competition Level: <\/strong>Indian athletes often face stiff competition from countries with a more established sports culture and better funding, making it challenging to achieve podium finishes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives Taken by Government<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Khelo India: <\/strong>To promote sports at the grassroots level. It includes talent identification, coaching, sports infrastructure development, and organizing competitions at school and university levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Sports Policy: <\/strong>To enhance the quality of sports training, promote participation, and increase the number of athletes competing internationally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sports Authority of India (SAI): <\/strong>A key institution responsible for nurturing young talent and providing training facilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Sports Awards:<\/strong> The awards are given annually to recognize and reward excellence in sports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund For Sportspersons (PDUNWFS):<\/strong> It was set up in 1982 with a view to assisting outstanding Sportspersons of yesteryear.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Sports Development Fund: <\/strong>The Fund helps sportspersons excel by providing them opportunities to train under coaches of international repute.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It also provides financial assistance for development of infrastructure and other activities for promotion of sports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS): <\/strong>To identify and support athletes with potential to win medals at the Olympic Games.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It provides financial assistance for training, coaching, and participation in international competitions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mission Olympic Cell (MOC):<\/strong> A body within the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to monitor and provide support for athletes\u2019 training and preparation for the Olympics under the TOPS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Sports Federations (NSFs): <\/strong>The government recognizes and funds NSFs, which are responsible for promoting and developing their respective sports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Measures that can be taken\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Funding:<\/strong> Increase investment in sports facilities, especially in rural and underserved areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Identification of Talent: <\/strong>Implement sports programs in schools to identify and nurture talent from a young age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Encouragement to other sports: <\/strong>Promote a wider variety of sports beyond cricket, such as athletics, swimming, and indigenous sports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leagues and Competitions:<\/strong> Establish professional leagues and competitions in lesser-known sports to boost participation and viewership.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corporate Sponsorships: <\/strong>Encourage partnerships between private companies and sports organizations to provide financial backing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Role Models:<\/strong> Highlight successful athletes to inspire youngsters to pursue sports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2
