category<\/strong> for hunger levels.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the Global Hunger Index (GHI)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GHI is a tool for<strong> comprehensively measuring and tracking hunger<\/strong> at global, regional, and national levels.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The index is published by <strong>Concern Worldwide,<\/strong> an Irish humanitarian organisation, and Welthungerhilfe, a German aid agency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ced5c2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"912\" height=\"902\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Global-Hunger-Index-2024-jpg.webp\" alt=\"Global-Hunger-Index-2024\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-30815\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ced5c2; width:459px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Global-Hunger-Index-2024-jpg.webp 912w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Global-Hunger-Index-2024-300x297.webp 300w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Global-Hunger-Index-2024-768x760.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 912px) 100vw, 912px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Findings of the GHI 2024<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The 2024 Global Hunger Index <strong>score for the world is 18.3<\/strong>, considered <strong>moderate, down only slightly from the 2016 score of 18.8.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Little progress <\/strong>has been made on reducing hunger since 2016, and the prospects for achieving <strong>Zero Hunger<\/strong> by the target date of <strong>2030 are grim<\/strong>, with <strong>42 countries <\/strong>still experiencing <strong>alarming or serious hunger.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The wars in Gaza and Sudan<\/strong> have led to exceptional food crises.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Somalia, Yemen, Chad, and Madagascar<\/strong> are the countries with the highest 2024 GHI scores; Burundi and South Sudan are also provisionally designated as alarming.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Progress has been notable<\/strong> for example in Bangladesh, Mozambique, Nepal, Somalia, and Togo, although challenges remain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India&#8217;s performance<\/strong> remains concerning, in comparison to the South Asian neighbours such as <strong>Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, which fall into the &#8220;moderate&#8221; category.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is listed alongside countries like <strong>Pakistan and Afghanistan<\/strong>, which also face severe hunger challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The report reveals alarming statistics:<\/strong> 13.7 percent of India&#8217;s population is undernourished, 35.5 percent of children under five are stunted, 18.7 percent suffer from wasting, and 2.9 percent of children die before their fifth birthday.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Policy Recommendations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strengthen accountability to international law and enforce the right to food.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote gender-transformative approaches in food and climate policies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Invest in gender, climate, and food justice, ensuring public resources address inequalities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Initiatives by Government of India to address Hunger<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>Mid Day Meal Programme:<\/strong> It is a flagship programme of the Government of India aiming at <strong>enhancing enrolment, retention and attendance and simultaneously improving nutritional levels among children<\/strong> studying in Government, Local Body and Government-aided primary and upper primary school areas across the country.<br>&#8211; <strong>The National Food Security Act, 2013: <\/strong>The Act provides for coverage of upto <strong>75% of the rural population and upto 50% of the urban population<\/strong> for receiving subsidized foodgrains under Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS), thus covering about two-thirds of the population.\u00a0<br>1. The Act also has a special focus on the <strong>nutritional support to women and children.<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>Poshan Tracker:<\/strong> The Ministry of Women and Child Development developed and deployed the <strong>&#8216;Poshan Tracker&#8217;<\/strong> ICT Application as an important governance tool.\u00a0<br>1. The Poshan Tracker has incorporated WHO&#8217;s expanded tables, which provide day-based z-scores, to dynamically determine stunting, wasting, underweight, and obesity status based on a child&#8217;s height, weight, gender, and age.<br>&#8211; The Central Government launched <strong>Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY)<\/strong> with the specific purpose of ameliorating the hardships faced by the poor and needy due to economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.\u00a0<br>1. The allocation of free food grains under PMGKAY <strong>was in addition to normal allocation done under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013.\u00a0<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>SakshamAnganwadi and Poshan 2.0 (Mission Poshan 2.0)<\/strong> includes key schemes such as the<strong> POSHAN Abhiyaan, Anganwadi Services and Scheme for Adolescent Girls <\/strong>as direct targeted interventions to address the problem of malnutrition in the country.\u00a0<br>1. The beneficiaries under the Anganwadi Services scheme are children in the age<strong> group of 0-6 years, pregnant women and lactating mothers.\u00a0<\/strong><br>2.
