{"id":30720,"date":"2024-10-11T17:48:35","date_gmt":"2024-10-11T12:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=30720"},"modified":"2025-07-11T18:16:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T12:46:16","slug":"21st-asean-india-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/11-10-2024\/21st-asean-india-summit","title":{"rendered":"21st ASEAN-India Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/ International Relations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Prime Minister and ASEAN leaders<\/strong> reviewed how the <strong>ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership<\/strong> has progressed so far and discussed plans for future cooperation in Vientiane, Lao PDR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PM announced a <strong>10-point plan <\/strong>which includes:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Celebrating the year 2025 as <strong>ASEAN-India Year of Tourism<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To celebrate a decade of <strong>Act East Policy<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review of ASEAN-India<strong> Trade in Goods Agreement<\/strong> by 2025 etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The leaders declared that they would explore <strong>collaboration of cross-border linkages between payment <\/strong>systems in ASEAN and India through digital solutions.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India will share its knowledge and experiences in using <strong>digital public infrastructure (DPI) <\/strong>such as Aadhaar and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the ASEAN nations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The leaders agreed to create a new <strong>ASEAN-India Plan of Action (2026-2030)<\/strong> and adopted Two Joint Statements;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Joint Statement on Strengthening ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership<\/strong> for Peace, Stability and Prosperity in the Region in the context of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) with the Support of India&#8217;s Act East Policy (AEP),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Joint Statement on <strong>Advancing Digital Transformation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leaders welcomed the launch of the<strong> ASEAN-India Fund for Digital Future<\/strong> to support joint activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The PM of India emphasized the need to complete the review of<strong> ASEAN-India FTA (AITIGA)<\/strong> in a time bound manner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background has-fixed-layout\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>ASEAN India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITGA)<\/strong><br><br>&#8211; India signed an FTA in goods with ASEAN in 2009, which came into force in 2010.&nbsp;<br>a. A separate FTA in services was signed in 2014.<br>&#8211; The FTA between India and ASEAN is also known as the ASEAN India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITGA).&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&#8211; The pact resulted in disproportionate benefits for ASEAN.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of ASEAN for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Counter China&#8217;s Influence:<\/strong> ASEAN\u2019s strategic location makes it a critical partner for balancing China\u2019s growing influence in the region.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade and Investment:<\/strong> In 2021-2022, trade between India and ASEAN stood at around $110 billion. ASEAN countries are also a significant destination for Indian investments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indo-Pacific Region: <\/strong>ASEAN is central to India&#8217;s Indo-Pacific strategy, which seeks to promote a free, open, and rules-based order in the region.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s Act East Policy <\/strong>places ASEAN at its core to enhance connectivity, maritime cooperation, and economic engagement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Counter-Terrorism:<\/strong> India collaborates with ASEAN on counter-terrorism, transnational crime, and cybersecurity initiatives.
