{"id":30532,"date":"2024-10-08T17:52:08","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T12:22:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=30532"},"modified":"2025-07-05T17:16:38","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T11:46:38","slug":"draft-national-sports-policy-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/08-10-2024\/draft-national-sports-policy-2024","title":{"rendered":"Draft National Sports Policy 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/ Governance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ministry of youth affairs and sports has unveiled the draft National Sports Policy 2024 for public feedback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Points of the Policy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Some of the key features<\/strong> of the NSP are;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Implementing <strong>physical literacy initiatives,<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing a robust <strong>talent identification <\/strong>and development system,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To develop sports and physical literacy as major subjects in educational institutions in alignment with <strong>National Education Policy 2020.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A National Sports Education Board<\/strong> to enhance the recognition and attractiveness of sports as a career option will be founded.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It calls for policies and schemes to actively encourage extensive <strong>participation from the private sector<\/strong> in sports development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Need for new policy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The existing NSP was issued in 2001<\/strong> and it is imperative to formulate a new NSP that encompasses the latest developments in the field of Sports and presents a roadmap to address the present and future challenges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited Infrastructure:<\/strong> The majority of India\u2019s population, especially in rural areas, has minimal access to sports facilities, coaches, and competitive opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poor Talent Identification:<\/strong> Unlike countries with strong sports systems like the U.S. or China, India lacks an organized, nationwide talent identification program that scouts and nurtures young athletes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Political Interference:<\/strong> Political influence in the functioning of sports bodies leads to favoritism, affecting the merit-based selection of athletes and coaches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cost of Training: <\/strong>Many talented athletes from economically weaker sections find it difficult to afford the high costs of professional training and equipment, leading to early dropouts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scheme for Promotion of Sports Culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Khelo India Scheme: <\/strong>Launched in 2018, it aims to create a robust sports ecosystem at the grassroots level. It provides financial support for training and development, identifying and nurturing talent across different sports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS)<\/strong> is a program by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to identify and nurture sports talent in children aged 8\u201312 years.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sports Infrastructure: <\/strong>India now boasts approximately 100 sports facilities that meet international standards.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The National Investment Pipeline (NIP) and the National Monetization Pipeline (NMP) <\/strong>are two key initiatives to further enhance sports infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS):<\/strong> It was launched in 2014 with a mission to identify, groom, and prepare potential medal prospects for the Olympics, and to elevate India\u2019s medal prospects. It includes;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Elite Athlete Identification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial Support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sporting Culture:<\/strong> Cultivating a sporting culture from an early age is crucial.
