{"id":30159,"date":"2024-09-28T19:12:48","date_gmt":"2024-09-28T13:42:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=30159"},"modified":"2025-07-12T16:37:41","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T11:07:41","slug":"global-innovation-index-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/28-09-2024\/global-innovation-index-2024","title":{"rendered":"Global Innovation Index 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus:GS3\/ Science and Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has risen to <strong>39th position<\/strong> among 133 global economies in the Global Innovation Index 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Global Innovation Index (GII) is published by the <strong>World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO),<\/strong> a specialized agency of the <strong>United Nations.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It <strong>measures innovation based on criteria <\/strong>that include institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, credit, investment, linkages; the creation, absorption and diffusion of knowledge; and creative outputs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Global Innovation Index 2024<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Top performer:<\/strong> Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, Singapore and the United Kingdom&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fastest 10-year climbers: <\/strong>China, Turkiye, India, Viet Nam and the Philippines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Performance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has been on a rising trajectory, over the past several years in the Global Innovation Index (GII), from a rank of <strong>81 in 2015 to 40 in 2023.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India&#8217;s strengths<\/strong> lie in key indicators such as <strong>&nbsp;Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services exports<\/strong> (at <strong>1st place, <\/strong>globally), venture capital received and intangible asset intensity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India&#8217;s unicorn companies<\/strong> also secure the country the <strong>8th rank globally.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives taken by India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Atal Innovation Mission<\/strong> has played a major role in expanding the Innovation ecosystem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF)<\/strong> was established to foster a culture of research and innovation throughout India\u2019s universities, research institutions, and R&amp;D laboratories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) <\/strong>established by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) is aimed at strengthening and empowering emerging biotechnology enterprises to undertake strategic research and innovation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Research Foundation (NRF):<\/strong> Announced as part of the National Education Policy 2020, NRF aims to promote a culture of research and innovation in universities and higher education institutions by funding interdisciplinary research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fragmented Innovation Ecosystem:<\/strong> India\u2019s innovation ecosystem lacks integration between academia, industry, and government. Collaboration across these sectors is weak, leading to poor commercialization of research outputs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skill Mismatch and Brain Drain: <\/strong>Despite a large pool of STEM graduates, many lack the skills required for cutting-edge innovation.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Additionally, many skilled professionals seek better opportunities abroad, contributing to brain drain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructural Bottlenecks:<\/strong> Insufficient infrastructure, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, hinders the growth of innovative enterprises.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Private sector participation in R&amp;D remains limited<\/strong> in India.
