{"id":30086,"date":"2024-09-27T19:13:24","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T13:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=30086"},"modified":"2025-07-12T16:23:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T10:53:16","slug":"world-tourism-day-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/27-09-2024\/world-tourism-day-2024","title":{"rendered":"World Tourism Day 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>World Tourism Day is celebrated on <strong>27th of September<\/strong> every year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Background:<\/strong> The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) established World Tourism Day in <strong>1980,<\/strong> marking the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on September 27, 1970.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Objectives: <\/strong>The day is celebrated with the aim of using tourism as a major means for sustainable development and poverty alleviation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Theme for 2024: <\/strong>\u2018Tourism and Peace.\u2019&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Potential of Tourism in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India is geographically diverse and offers a variety of cultures<\/strong> that come with its own experiences, making it one of the leading countries in terms of international tourism expenditure.\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By 2028<\/strong>, India&#8217;s tourism and hospitality industry is projected to <strong>generate revenue of over $59 Bn.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Additionally, Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) are anticipated to reach<strong> 30.5 Mn by 2028.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to the<strong> Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2024 report <\/strong>published by the World Economic Forum (WEF),<strong> <\/strong>India is ranked<strong> 39th among 119 countries.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the World Travel &amp; Tourism Council (WTTC\u2019s) Economic Impact 2023 report, <strong>India\u2019s Travel and Tourism GDP contribution grew by 5.9%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Benefits of Promoting tourism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preservation of Heritage:<\/strong> Tourism leads to restoring and maintaining historical monuments, temples, forts etc. ensuring their preservation for future generations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rural and village tourism<\/strong> initiatives can provide economic benefits to smaller towns and villages, promoting inclusive growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soft Power Diplomacy: <\/strong>Tourism serves as an important tool for soft power diplomacy by showcasing India\u2019s culture, art, and history to the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Job Creation: <\/strong>It leads to the creation of employment opportunities in various sectors, including hospitality, transportation, tour guiding, and handicrafts etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges in Tourism Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Infrastructure Deficits:<\/strong> Many sites lack adequate infrastructure such as transportation, accommodation, and sanitation facilities, hindering the tourist experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crime Against Tourists:<\/strong> Incidents of theft, scams, and even violent crimes against tourists negatively impact the perception of safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Degradation:<\/strong> Unregulated tourism has led to <strong>environmental damage<\/strong> in some regions (e.g., Himalayas, beaches in Goa) and <strong>cultural erosion<\/strong>, where local traditions and heritage sites are over-commercialized or poorly managed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Problem of Carrying Capacity:<\/strong> Certain sites experience short but intense tourist seasons, leading to overcrowding and straining local infrastructure.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand<\/strong> causes pressure on transport infrastructure and leads to safety hazards like landslides during the monsoon season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives taken<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Swadesh Darshan scheme:<\/strong> The scheme Focuses on developing theme-based tourist circuits such as <strong>Buddhist Ramayana, Coastal, Himalayan, Desert etc.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD): <\/strong>It was launched in 2015 to identify and develop pilgrim sites across the country to promote religious tourism.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bharat Gaurav Tourist Trains: <\/strong>These trains provide tourists with an opportunity to explore famous heritage sites, religious places, and historically significant locations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spiritual projects <\/strong>across India such as the Kashi Corridor, the Mahakal Corridor and the Ram Temple in Ayodhya are attracting a high volume of tourists and have been helping boost the local economy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Ministry of Tourism<\/strong> has undertaken a Destination Based Skill Development training programme to train local people residing near the tourist sites and destinations.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>100% FDI <\/strong>is permitted for tourism construction projects, including the development of exquisite hotels, resorts, and unparalleled recreational facilities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>World Tourism Day highlights the impact of tourism on the global economy and its role in promoting mutual understanding among different cultures.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tourism is not just a leisure activity;
