{"id":30032,"date":"2024-09-26T18:20:43","date_gmt":"2024-09-26T12:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=30032"},"modified":"2024-09-26T18:20:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-26T12:50:45","slug":"10-years-of-make-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/26-09-2024\/10-years-of-make-in-india","title":{"rendered":"10 Years of Make in India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>On September 25, 2014<\/strong>, the &#8220;Make in India&#8221; initiative completed 10 years as a pivotal step in India&#8217;s nation-building efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pillars of \u2018Make in India\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New Processes: <\/strong>The &#8220;Make in India&#8221; initiative identified &#8216;ease of doing business&#8217; as a crucial factor for promoting entrepreneurship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>New Infrastructure:<\/strong> The government focused on developing industrial corridors and smart cities, integrating state-of-the-art technology and high-speed communication to create world-class infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>New Sectors: <\/strong>Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) was significantly opened up in various sectors including Defence Production, Insurance, Medical Devices, Construction, and Railway infrastructure.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>New Mindset: <\/strong>The government embraced a role as a facilitator rather than a regulator, to foster a collaborative environment that supported industrial growth and innovation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b5cfe2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b5cfe2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"487\" height=\"301\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/09\/key-initiatives-driving-growth-and-self-reliance.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-30033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/09\/key-initiatives-driving-growth-and-self-reliance.png 487w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/09\/key-initiatives-driving-growth-and-self-reliance-300x185.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Production linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes<\/strong><br>&#8211; The Schemes were introduced to enhance the country\u2019s manufacturing capabilities and boost exports with an <strong>outlay of \u20b91.97 lakh crore.\u00a0<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>It covers 14 key sectors<\/strong> aimed at fostering investment in cutting-edge technology and promoting global competitiveness.<br><strong>PM GatiShakti<\/strong><br>&#8211; Launched in 2021, PM GatiShakti is a strategic initiative aimed at achieving Aatmanirbhar Bharat and a <strong>US $5 trillion economy by 2025<\/strong> through the creation of <strong>multimodal and last-mile connectivity infrastructure.<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>It is driven by 7 engines<\/strong>, namely: Railways, Roads, Ports, Waterways, Airports, Mass Transport, Logistics Infrastructure.<br><strong>Semiconductor Ecosystem Development<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>The Semicon India programme<\/strong> was approved in <strong>2021<\/strong>, encompasses four key schemes:<br>1. Modified Scheme for Setting Up Semiconductor Fabs in India<br>2. Modified Scheme for Setting Up Display Fabs in India<br>3. Modified Scheme for Setting Up Compound Semiconductors, Silicon Photonics, Sensors Fabs, and Discrete Semiconductors, along with Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) \/ OSAT Facilities in India<br>4. Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme.<br><strong>National Logistics Policy (NLP)<\/strong><br>&#8211; Launched in 2022, the Policy targets reducing logistics costs, improving India&#8217;s Logistics Performance Index ranking to among the top 25 countries by 2030, and developing a data-driven decision support system.\u00a0<strong>Industrialization and UrbanizationThe National Industrial Corridor Development Programme <\/strong>is India&#8217;s most ambitious infrastructure initiative, aiming to create <strong>&#8220;Smart Cities&#8221;<\/strong> and advanced industrial hubs.\u00a0<br><strong>Startup India<\/strong><br>&#8211; Launched<strong> 2016,<\/strong> the Initiative aimed at supporting entrepreneurs, and building a robust startup ecosystem.<br>&#8211; India boasts the <strong>third-largest startup ecosystem<\/strong> in the world, with 148,931 DPIIT Recognized Startups, which have created over 15.5 lakh direct jobs.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Achievements under Make in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>FDI inflows have steadily risen<\/strong>, starting from $45.14 billion in 2014-15 to a record <strong>$84.83 billion in 2021-22.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India made remarkable progress in improving its business environment, climbing from 142nd in 2014 to <strong>63rd in the World Bank\u2019s Doing Business Report (DBR) <\/strong>published in October 2019 before its discontinuation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India recorded <strong>merchandise exports worth $437.06 billion in FY 2023-24, <\/strong>reflecting the country&#8217;s growing role in global trade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The textile industry<\/strong> has created a staggering <strong>14.5 crore jobs<\/strong> across the country, significantly contributing to India&#8217;s employment landscape.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vande Bharat Trains,<\/strong> India\u2019s first indigenous semi-high-speed trains, are a shining example of the success of the &#8216;Make in India&#8217; initiative.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India became a <strong>major exporter of life-saving vaccines<\/strong> to many developing and underdeveloped countries across the world.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s electronics sector<\/strong> has experienced rapid growth, reaching <strong>USD 155 billion <\/strong>in FY23.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the concerns?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The share of<strong> manufacturing in India&#8217;s GDP<\/strong> was<strong> 17.3 percent in 2013-14,<\/strong> and it was still stagnant at <strong>17.7 percent in 2023 <\/strong>far from the target of <strong>25% by 2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The share of the<strong> manufacturing sector in total employment<\/strong> in the country has marginally declined from <strong>11.6 percent<\/strong> in 2013-14 to <strong>10.6 percent<\/strong> in 2022-23.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s exports as a share of GDP has fallen<\/strong> from 25.2 percent in 2013-14 to<strong> 22.7 percent in 2013-24.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exports are also relatively concentrated in goods and services that tend not to be labor-intensive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As the &#8220;Make in India&#8221;
