{"id":30029,"date":"2024-09-26T18:19:43","date_gmt":"2024-09-26T12:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=30029"},"modified":"2024-09-26T18:19:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-26T12:49:45","slug":"global-initiative-on-digital-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/26-09-2024\/global-initiative-on-digital-health","title":{"rendered":"Global Initiative on Digital Health\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As per the World Health Organization (WHO) and ITU (International Telecommunication Union), an investment of an additional <strong>US$0.24 per patient per year<\/strong> in digital health interventions, can help save more than 2 million lives from noncommunicable diseases over the next decade.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These investments could also<strong> prevent approximately 7 million hospitalisations<\/strong> over the next 10 years.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This will significantly reduce the strain on healthcare systems and lead to a total <strong>economic gain of $199.2 billion globally.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The economic benefits of digital health investment were found to be particularly compelling for <strong>low- and middle-income countries,<\/strong> where the average required spending was only $0.10 per person per year.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The cost for upper middle-income countries is estimated to be $0.16 and for high-income countries at $0.67.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cumulatively, the global spending required for these interventions would total <strong>$9.8 billion over the 10-year period.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report mentions India\u2019s use of digital technologies to address healthcare disparities, particularly in <strong>rural areas where more than 65% of the population lives.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report called on governments and stakeholders to take decisive action, ensuring that digital health tools are integrated effectively into healthcare systems to combat the rising burden of NCDs globally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs)<\/strong><br>&#8211; NCDs, also known as <strong>chronic diseases,<\/strong> tend to be of <strong>long duration<\/strong> and are the result of a combination of <strong>genetic, physiological, environmental and behavioural factors.<\/strong><br>&#8211; The main types of NCD are <strong>cardiovascular diseases<\/strong> (such as heart attacks and stroke), <strong>cancers, chronic respiratory diseases<\/strong> (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma) and<strong> diabetes.<\/strong><br>&#8211; The major NCDs share<strong> four behavioral risk factors-<\/strong> unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, and use of tobacco and alcohol. Factors contributing to the rise of NCDs also include ageing, rapid unplanned urbanization and globalization.<br>&#8211; NCDs including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease, are collectively responsible for <strong>74% of all deaths worldwide.\u00a0<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Global Initiative on Digital Health (GIDH)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Initiative on Digital Health (GIDH) in <strong>2023<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The initiative have <strong>four main components<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e8ebdc\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"654\" height=\"294\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Global-Initiative-on-Digital-Health-GIDH-jpg.webp\" alt=\"Global Initiative on Digital Health (GIDH)\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-30030\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e8ebdc; width:542px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Global-Initiative-on-Digital-Health-GIDH-jpg.webp 654w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Global-Initiative-on-Digital-Health-GIDH-300x135.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 654px) 100vw, 654px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Aim: <\/strong>ALIGN efforts to support the Global Strategy on Digital Health 2020\u20132025;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SUPPORT quality assured technical assistance to develop and strengthen standards-based and interoperable systems aligned to global best practices, norms and standards;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FACILITATE the deliberate use of quality assured digital transformation tools that enable governments to manage their digital health transformation journey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digital Health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Digital health refers to the <strong>use of technology to improve health and healthcare delivery.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It encompasses a <strong>broad range of tools and solutions <\/strong>that integrate digital technologies with health services, aiming to enhance patient outcomes, streamline processes, and increase accessibility.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It includes tools such as Telemedicine, Mobile Health (mHealth), Electronic Health Records (EHRs), Wearable Devices, Health Applications etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Improved Access: <\/strong>Digital tools can reach remote areas, connect patients to specialists, and enable virtual consultations, expanding healthcare access.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enhanced Affordability: <\/strong>Telemedicine, electronic prescribing, and data-driven resource allocation can potentially reduce healthcare costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Personalized Care:<\/strong> Electronic health records (EHRs) and wearable devices facilitate personalized treatment plans and preventive care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Empowered Patients:<\/strong> Digital platforms can educate patients, enhance medication adherence, and promote self-management of chronic conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Streamlined Healthcare Delivery:<\/strong> Digitization empowers efficient data management, administrative processes, and resource optimization within healthcare systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Health Policy (NHP) 2017: <\/strong>This policy emphasizes the use of technology in health services and promotes the integration of digital health solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Digital Health Mission (NDHM): <\/strong>Launched in 2020, NDHM aims to create a digital health ecosystem in India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It focuses on creating a Health ID for every citizen, facilitating access to health records, and ensuring the integration of healthcare services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM):<\/strong> It enables the establishment of health accounts, electronic health records, and health information exchanges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>E Sanjeevani Telemedicine Platform:<\/strong> Facilitates virtual consultations between doctors and patients across the country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Health Management Information System (HMIS): <\/strong>This initiative aims to improve the collection and use of health data for better planning and decision-making.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital India Initiative:<\/strong> While broader in scope, this initiative supports digital health by promoting internet connectivity, digital literacy, and technology use in various sectors, including healthcare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Digital health is a proven accelerator to <strong>advance health outcomes and achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC)<\/strong> and health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
