{"id":28798,"date":"2024-09-02T18:42:19","date_gmt":"2024-09-02T13:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=28798"},"modified":"2024-09-05T16:25:11","modified_gmt":"2024-09-05T10:55:11","slug":"niti-aayog-report-on-edible-oils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/02-09-2024\/niti-aayog-report-on-edible-oils","title":{"rendered":"NITI Aayog Report on Edible Oils\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The report titled &#8220;Pathways and Strategies for Accelerating Growth in Edible Oils Towards the Goal of Atmanirbharta&#8221; was released by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/blog\/niti-aayog\/\"><strong>NITI Aayog<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key highlights of the report<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s edible vegetable oil sector is a significant player on the global stage, <strong>ranking fourth<\/strong> behind the <strong>USA, China, and Brazil.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In India there are <strong>seven major oilseed-growing states<\/strong> i.e. Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dfdad8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"630\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NITI-Aayog-Report-on-Edible-Oils-jpg.webp\" alt=\"Key highlights of the report\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-28799\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dfdad8; width:464px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NITI-Aayog-Report-on-Edible-Oils-jpg.webp 630w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2024\/09\/NITI-Aayog-Report-on-Edible-Oils-300x224.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Demand:<\/strong> The report highlights that over the past decades, <strong>per capita consumption<\/strong> of edible oil in the country has seen rise, reaching <strong>19.7 kg\/year.&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This surge in demand has significantly outpaced domestic production, leading to a heavy reliance on imports to meet both domestic and industrial needs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Import: <\/strong>In <strong>2022-23<\/strong>, India imported <strong>16.5 million tonnes (MT)<\/strong> of edible oils, with domestic production fulfilling only <strong>40-45% o<\/strong>f the country\u2019s requirements.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This situation presents a substantial challenge to the country\u2019s goal of achieving self-sufficiency in edible oils.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Under a Business-As-Usual (BAU) scenario<\/strong>, the national supply of edible oil is projected to increase to <strong>16 MT by 2030<\/strong> and <strong>26.7 MT by 2047.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives taken by Government<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Mission for Edible Oils &#8211; Oil Palm (NMEO-OP):<\/strong> The mission is committed to escalating oil palm cultivation and elevating Crude Palm Oil production to 11.20 lakh tonnes by 2025-26.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Food Security Mission- Oilseeds (NFSM-OS)<\/strong> is being implemented by the government from 2018-19 to augment the availability of edible oils and reduce the import burden by increasing the production and productivity of oilseeds and area expansion of Oil Palm &amp; Tree Borne Oilseeds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The government<strong> increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) <\/strong>for Oilseeds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Suggestions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To achieve self-sufficiency in this sector, the report suggests several strategic interventions to bridge the existing gap and ensure long-term sustainability.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The proposed strategy is structured across <strong>three key pillars:&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Crop Retention and Diversification,&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Horizontal Expansion:<\/strong> The Strategy aims to strategically <strong>increase the area <\/strong>dedicated to cultivating edible oil crops. Potential avenues include the utilization of rice fallow lands and highly suitable wastelands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vertical Expansion: <\/strong>The Strategy focuses on <strong>enhancing the yield <\/strong>of existing oilseed cultivation.
