{"id":25052,"date":"2024-05-27T18:37:09","date_gmt":"2024-05-27T13:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=25052"},"modified":"2024-05-28T10:20:34","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T04:50:34","slug":"undefined-borders-have-set-india-back-economically","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/27-05-2024\/undefined-borders-have-set-india-back-economically","title":{"rendered":"Undefined Borders Have Set India Back Economically"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS 3\/Internal Security<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0dab4a35479cb7a88ac0f778de143bb9\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>In Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>National Security Adviser Ajit Doval said that the undefined borders in the west and north have adversely affected the country<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0163550ed617da6c5c87218fd426e148\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>Border management in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India currently has more than 15000 km of land borders and more than 7500 km of maritime borders.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It shares borders with seven countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India\u2019s border management comprises border region development, communication, and coordination with the neighbouring states and programs to enhance the national interests of India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0046f4553a2a78410ee3fb848586c296\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>Need&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Undefined borders in the west and north have adversely affected the country and its weight on internal security in terms of terrorism, radicalism, drug trafficking is a liability for the nation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Border security also has a bearing on socio-economic security of the country such as the coming of radicalisation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The borders need security to regulate trade, travel, and illegal cross-border movements.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-64cc7d24d84c54e0f62f1c9283e6dfca\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>Issues and Challenges&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has the most difficult task of managing its multi-nature borders that run through plains, hills, mountains, snow-covered peaks, deserts, riverine territories, jungles and marshes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India shares an undefined border with China in the north, while a large area has been occupied by Pakistan in the west.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of effective consultation between the central and State governments on the issue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The slow investment in technology for border<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development in India has resulted in weak border management for the Armed forces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-376013813f64f66ec0573739fe0b4204\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>Steps&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The d<strong>evelopment of border infrastructure h<\/strong>as contributed to boosting trade and economic growth in border regions, particularly with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&nbsp;Improved road and rail connectivity <\/strong>facilitates smoother movement of goods and people across borders, thereby promoting cross-border trade and economic exchanges.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The construction of integrated checkposts<\/strong> and trade facilitation centers has streamlined customs clearance procedures and reduced trade barriers, further facilitating trade and commerce along India&#8217;s borders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The<strong> Border Area Development Programme [BADP] <\/strong>was started in the year 1986-87 for balanced development of border areas of States bordering Pakistan, namely, Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan and subsequently it was extended to all the land borders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government has approved <strong>Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP)<\/strong> as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme on 15th February,2023&nbsp; for&nbsp; comprehensive development of the select villages in border in the States of&nbsp; Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and UT of Ladakh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government has decided to<strong> construct a fence along the entire 1643-kilometer-long Indo-Myanmar border.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e2418cc5398a3a7f2d9236aad7d7492c\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>Conclusion and Way Forward&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the next 10 years India will be a $10 trillion economy and will become self-reliant in military power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is the need for technological advancements in border management.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use of technology like satellite imagery, UAVs could be used to monitor the border area development in real time.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure developmen<\/strong>t should be specific to theatres and roads, mobile towers should be built but every theatre has got its unique challenge.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tactical intelligence is the most important<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paramilitary organizations&nbsp;
