wp-elements-0dab4a35479cb7a88ac0f778de143bb9\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>In Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s recent economic success, solid momentum, and promising prospects are making the country more influential<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f1db775929b5f3e03bd9f4257da43a3f\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>About&nbsp; India\u2019s Global Rise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s aggregate power has grown over the past two decades \u2014 evident in robust economic growth, military capabilities, and a largely young demography.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Its inclusion in<strong> key global institutions<\/strong> such as th<strong>e G-20<\/strong>, as an i<strong>nvitee at G-7 <\/strong>meetings, and active <strong>participation <\/strong>in multilateral groups such as the <strong>Quad,<\/strong> <strong>BRICS<\/strong>, and the <strong>Shanghai Cooperation Organisation<\/strong> further highlight its <strong>geopolitical significanc<\/strong>e and its powerful presence globally, even if it is not a member of the United Nations Security Council.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India\u2019s global rise is also aided by <strong>growing international attention<\/strong> on the <strong>Indo-Pacific,<\/strong> a theatre that is pivotal to <strong>global strategic stability<\/strong>, where India has a central position, geographically and otherwise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A major reason why the United States and its allies are keen to accommodate India\u2019s global interests including in order to push back China in the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bef8d291d12d7880e432511d373d4b54\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>Emerging Challenges&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s influence is declining in <strong>South Asia<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When compared to India\u2019s influence in the region during the Cold War or in comparison to China\u2019s influence in the region today,&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its waning regional influence is caused by diminishing relative power (vis-\u00e0-vis China), loss of primacy in South Asia, and fundamental changes in South Asian geopolitics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The arrival of China in South Asia, the withdrawal of the U.S. from the region, and India\u2019s tilt to the Indo-Pacific have shifted the regional balance of power in Beijing\u2019s favour.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India\u2019s regional decline is a product of the <strong>dynamics of comparative power, <\/strong>and geopolitical choices made by the region\u2019s smaller powers.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s smaller neighbours seem to find China as a useful hedge against India, for the moment at least.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>China\u2019s rise will, therefore, mean that India may no longer be the most consequential power in the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-078b67809e19e0a930472a2e5d2d419f\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>Way Forward for India&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India <strong>must revisit some of its traditional conceptions <\/strong>of the region, <strong>\u2018modernise\u2019 its primacy in South Asia,<\/strong> and take proactive and imaginative policy steps to meet the China challenge in the region.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First of all,<strong> India must accept the reality <\/strong>that the region, the neighbours and the region\u2019s geopolitics have fundamentally changed over the decade-and-a-half at the least.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India must focus on its <strong>strengths <\/strong>rather than trying to match the might of the People\u2019s Republic of China in every respect\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fashioning a new engagement <\/strong>with the region that reflects India\u2019s traditional strengths and the region\u2019s changed realities is essential.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reclaiming Buddhist heritage is one such example.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India\u2019s<strong> continental strategy<\/strong> is replete with challenges whereas its<strong> maritime space has an abundance of opportunities<\/strong> for enhancing trade, joining minilateralism, and creating new issue-based coalitions, among others.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India must use its maritime (Indo-Pacific) advantages to cater to its many continental handicaps.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doing so could involve including India\u2019s smaller South Asian neighbours to the Indo-Pacific strategic conversations.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India and its partners<\/strong> (the U.S., Japan, Australia, the European Union, and others) must find ways of engaging and partnering with Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Bangladesh as part of their larger Indo-Pacific strategy.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New Delhi should make creative uses of its s<strong>oft power to retain its influence in the region.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>One way to do that is to actively encourage informal contacts between political and civil society actors in India and those in other South Asian countries.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a desire to join hands with external friendly partners both in the Indian Ocean and South Asia so as to deal with the region\u2019s common challenges.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;This openness in New Delhi, and the desire of the external actors to engage the region, must be utilised to address the difficulties arising out of New Delhi\u2019s regional decline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Mains
