{"id":23638,"date":"2024-04-09T18:23:48","date_gmt":"2024-04-09T12:53:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=23638"},"modified":"2024-04-10T11:03:12","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T05:33:12","slug":"daily-current-affairs-09-04-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/09-04-2024\/daily-current-affairs-09-04-2024","title":{"rendered":"Daily Current Affairs 09-04-2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0b57a21c7854642f5062af37e5ae9565\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>Mangal Pandey<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/History and Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cb9dfec66108ce9f742f389a74ffcdb1\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mangal Pandey, was hanged to death by the East India Company on April 8.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5f077d3f6cdce2eb40c8488bd933c5c6\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mangal Pandey belonged to the kingdom of Awadh, which supplied large numbers of soldiers of war to the Company\u2019s army.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He joined the East India Company\u2019s army at the age of 22 as a soldier in the 6th company of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7868ef65d25b2c0072a9bd57de3898bf\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>Annexation of Awadh<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>1856<\/strong> Awadh was treacherously annexed by the British.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The deposition of the Nawab and the confiscation of the villages of taluqdars during the land revenue settlement of 1856 caused outrage.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-745c09f30ef4618d28239f01ded36523\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>The mutiny and hanging of Mangal Pandey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mangal Pandey refused to use the newly introduced Enfield rifle, due to use of&nbsp; animal fat (beef and pork) in the cartridges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This was viewed by the soldiers as a direct assault on their religious beliefs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On March 29, 1857, he mutinied and fired at his Senior Sergeant Major.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was overpowered and hanged by the order of a Court Martial at Lal Bagan in Barrackpore.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1a89fc9f48d2c76dcc40f5551e2562a6\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>The spread of the 1857 revolt and march to Delhi<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pandey\u2019s action was followed by defiance by the soldiers of the <strong>7th Awadh Regiment.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On May 11, 1857, a band of Sepoys from Meerut refused to use the new cartridges, killed their European officers and marched to the Red fort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-27af459761e0f278316eebb3f3b52c7e\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>Legacy of the revolt of 1857<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pandey\u2019s action changed the nature of British rule in India.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The British parliament passed an Act in <strong>1858,<\/strong> transferring all powers of the Company to the Crown. Queen Victoria was declared the Sovereign of British India.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Queen\u2019s Proclamation made by <strong>Lord Canning in 1858<\/strong>, to the Princes, Chiefs and people of India, unveiled a new policy of<strong> perpetual support <\/strong>for the native Princes, and non-intervention in matters of religious beliefs in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Queen\u2019s Proclamation was reinforced in <strong>1877<\/strong> The event came to be known as the <strong>Delhi Durbar.<\/strong> Queen Victoria assumed the title of than usual Arctic, and milder-than-usual weather in the mid-latitudes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conversely, when the Polar Vortex weakens, shifts, or splits, the polar jet stream often becomes extremely wavy, allowing warm air to flood into the Arctic and polar air to sink down into the mid-latitudes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can result in extreme cold snaps, snowstorms, and other winter weather events in areas United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was established in<strong> 1981.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It aims to achieve unity among its members based on their common objectives and their similar political and cultural identities, which are rooted in Arab and Islamic cultures.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presidency of the council rotates shared destiny and indivisible security of the member states, and any threat to one is a threat to all the member States.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It aims to preserve regional security and stability, tackle the challenges facing them and settle the disputes through peaceful means.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Counter Terrorism: <\/strong>It urges the member states to combat terrorism and extremism, stopping the flow of money to the hands of the terrorists and combat money laundering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maritime Security:<\/strong> It calls for regional and international coordination to ensure maritime security and ensure trade and energy supply routes.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As all the GCC countries are key suppliers of energy, any disruption in the sea lines of communication will directly affect their national economies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Peaceful use of Nuclear Energy: <\/strong>As the threat of a nuclear arms race in the region looms large with Iran and Israel having nuclear programmes, the GCC has urged to make the region a Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone (WMDFZ).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comment on Israel-Hamas War: <\/strong>The document has come at a time when the West Asian region is engulfed in a turmoil since the beginning of the Israel\u2013Hamas War in 2023.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The vision document makes explicit reference to the Israel\u2013Palestine issue and calls for activating the Arab Peace Initiative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3178d7a01807012b0eef277045541b71\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>India\u2019s Relations with GCC<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strategic Partnership: <\/strong>GCC is a major trade and investment partner for India.&nbsp; While India has close economic and political ties with all countries, the strategic partnership exists with only Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Oman.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy Security: <\/strong>GCC contributes to <strong>35% of India\u2019s oil imports <\/strong>and<strong> 70% of gas imports.<\/strong> India is executing the <strong>second phase of its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). <\/strong>&nbsp;Several GCC countries have expressed their interest in the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade and Investment:<\/strong> GCC countries contribute to about <strong>one-sixth of India\u2019s total trade. <\/strong>&nbsp;However, trade and Foreign Direct Investment from GCC is dominated by UAE and Saudi Arabia.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India also has a significant trade deficit with the GCC which is driven by India\u2019s dependence on GCC countries for oil and gas imports.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Free trade negotiations between the two parties have also been delayed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence Relations:<\/strong> India\u2019s defense engagements with these countries are gaining significant momentum.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From mere training of security personnel in various military institutes, they have extended ties to other areas, including intelligence sharing, counterterrorism, artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, and cybersecurity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-23d39977e4a1a2e05fe5ef5020e43ffc\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Realpolitik and strategic interests have been instrumental in bringing India closer to the Gulf countries, with both sides willing to overlook some of their ideological differences lately.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the long run, defense industrial cooperation and technology transfers will likely come to form a pivotal component of their strategic cooperation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The possibility for such an outcome remains high as Gulf states, like India, are also embarking on rapid military industrialization programs and in search of alternative arms vendors.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The convergences of interests \u2013 political, economic, technological and military-security \u2013&nbsp; therefore, could pave the way for the furtherance of India\u2019s military diplomacy with the Gulf wp-elements-5f077d3f6cdce2eb40c8488bd933c5c6\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation<\/strong> has been conducting household surveys on <strong>consumption\/consumer expenditure<\/strong> at regular intervals as part of its rounds, normally of <strong>one-year duration<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Since 1972<\/strong>, NSSO has been conducting the Consumer Expenditure Survey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&nbsp; is designed to collect i<strong>nformation on consumption of goods and services<\/strong> by the households.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The survey aims at generating estimates of household <strong>Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE)<\/strong> and its distribution separately for the rural and urban sectors of the country, for States and Union Territories, and for different socio-economic groups.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-24267f0ef8cdb3db7a97c7946b9d425a\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>Methodology Used<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the present survey, three <strong>3 questionnaires <\/strong>were used, covering:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food items;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consumables and services items, and;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Durable goods used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The survey had a separate <strong>provision for collection of information<\/strong> on the quantity of consumption of the number of items received and consumed by the households <strong>free of cost through various social welfare programmes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e871a9727fe4ea6eb07ea950cb2a95b1\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><strong>Changes in the Methodology<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First, there is <strong>change in item coverage<\/strong> with inclusion of new items and merging some of the obsolete items.
