class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s relationship with the UAE has evolved into becoming one of the most prominent bilateral relationships for India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not only has the UAE become <strong>India\u2019s strategic partne<\/strong>r but it has also become one of the most important linchpins of India\u2019s engagement in the Gulf region.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India-UAE&nbsp; :Pillars of Ties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Political : They <\/strong><strong>established diplomatic relations in 1972.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The traditionally strong bilateral relations enjoyed by India-UAE gained a new momentum when the <strong>Prime Minister of India<\/strong> visited in <strong>2015<\/strong>, the <strong>first PM of India in 34 years<\/strong> which marked the beginning of a new Comprehensive and Strategic partnership between the two countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During visit to the UAE in August 2019, Mr. Modi was conferred the UAE\u2019s top civilian honour, the<strong> Order of Zayed<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic partnership: <\/strong>&nbsp;India and UAE have <strong>shared trade <\/strong>links through the centuries.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The trade, which was <strong>dominated by traditional items <\/strong>such as dates, pearls and fishes, underwent a <strong>sharp change after the discovery of oil <\/strong>in the UAE (oil exports began from Abu Dhabi in 1962)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bilateral trade grew to $85 billion in 2022-23, making the UAE<strong> India\u2019s third-largest trading partner<\/strong> and <strong>India\u2019s second-largest export destination<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;The UAE is also the<strong> fourth-largest overall investor in India.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement<\/strong>, signed on February 18, 2022 aims to increase trade in services to $115 billion in five years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The RuPay card, a key component of<strong> India\u2019s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)<\/strong>, has been accepted in the U<strong>AE since August 2019<\/strong>, while from July 2023, the rupee was being accepted for transactions at Dubai\u2019s airports.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India and the UAE<\/strong> also operationalised a<strong> rupee-dirham settlement system<\/strong> when, in August 2023, the Indian Oil Corporation made a rupee payment to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company for crude oil imports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy security: <\/strong>The UAE is also<strong> India\u2019s trusted partner in energy security, <\/strong>being the only nation from the region which has strategic oil reserves stored in India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An agreement was signed in <strong>Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd (ISPRL)<\/strong> and <strong>the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company <\/strong>to to invest in the strategic crude oil storage facility in Mangaluru with an initial investment of $400 million.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence and security cooperation <\/strong>and people-to-people ties too are critical cogs in the relationship.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UAE has over 3.5 million Indians and Emiratis are quite familiar and sensitive to Indian culture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental:<\/strong> The convergence of ideas on global climate issues too was clear when Mr. Modi was in Dubai for the COP28 climate summit.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both India and the UAE co-launched the <strong>Global Green Credit Initiative.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multilateral Cooperation : <\/strong>India and the UAE enjoy strong cooperation at the United Nations.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both countries are also currently part of several plurilateral platforms such as<strong> BRICS, I2U2 <\/strong>(India-Israel-UAEUSA) and<strong> UFI (UAE-France-India) Trilateral, etc<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UAE was invited as a Guest Country to the G20 Summit held under India\u2019s Presidency in September 2023,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The UAE is also part of the <strong>India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) <\/strong>infrastructure project that was signed during the G-20 summit in Delhi.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Progress and Latest Developments: <\/strong>India\u2019s relationship with the UAE has evolved into becoming one of the most prominent bilateral relationships .\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The UAE has become<strong> India\u2019s strategic partner<\/strong> but it has also become one of the most important linchpins of India\u2019s engagement in the Gulf region.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi campus has been established, and the UAE opened a consulate in Hyderabad in June 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On February 1, 2024, the Indian government also approved the signing and<strong> ratification of a bilateral investment treaty <\/strong>with the UAE, which would <strong>significantly boost bilateral economic<\/strong> engagement, especially manufacturing and foreign direct investment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion and Way Forward&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The India-UAE story goes beyond temples, faith or the signing of strategic partnerships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India recognises and values the UAE\u2019s role in the region, the UAE too is cognisant of the \u2018global leadership\u2019 role that India is set to acquire.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are few major issues of divergence, which is something unique even among the best of friendly nations.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both countries recognise that this privileged strategic partnership is only set to grow stronger in the years ahead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The upcoming visit also comes at a critical time with the war in Gaza enveloping the region.
