{"id":21286,"date":"2024-02-06T17:11:45","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T11:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=21286"},"modified":"2024-02-06T17:15:48","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T11:45:48","slug":"malnutrition-among-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/06-02-2024\/malnutrition-among-women","title":{"rendered":"Malnutrition Among Women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus : GS 2\/Issues related to poverty and hunger\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In Context&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Uttar Pradesh is a remarkable example of the importance of women\u2019s empowerment in<strong> tackling<\/strong> <strong>malnutrition <\/strong>by supporting community-based micro enterprises led by self-help groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Malnutrition&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in a person\u2019s intake of energy and\/or nutrients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;The double burden of malnutrition consists of both undernutrition and overweight and obesity, as well as diet-related noncommunicable diseases.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Factors that perpetuate malnutrition in women<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Malnutrition persists due to<strong> depressed economic conditions<\/strong> in large parts of the country, the <strong>poor state of agriculture <\/strong>in India, <strong>persistent levels of unsafe sanitation practices,<\/strong> etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Early marriage,<\/strong> <strong>lack of education <\/strong>and <strong>poverty <\/strong>are some of the challenges that impact the <strong>health of women<\/strong> and <strong>lead to malnutrition.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic factors <\/strong>include the challenges women face in terms of access to food.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Despite being primary caregivers, women often<strong> lack financial independence<\/strong> or an equal say in spending decisions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural factors<\/strong> include gender norms that result in low intake of nutritious food by women.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add to this a <strong>patriarchal society<\/strong> that results in the unfair distribution of food, leading to women eating last, and the least.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>pandemic <\/strong>has led to an increase in the amount of unpaid work in the form of childcare and domestic chores, which have resulted in women neglecting self-care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Impacts&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Malnutrition affects productivity and perpetuates <strong>intergenerational inequity.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inadequate nutrition during girls\u2019 and women\u2019s lives can lead to weakened immunity, poor cognitive development, and an increased risk of life-threatening complications \u2013 including during pregnancy and childbirth \u2013 with dangerous and irreversible consequences for their<strong> children\u2019s survival, growth, learning, and future earning capacity.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Undernourished children are at risk of under-performing in studies and have limited job prospects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;This vicious cycle restrains the development of the country, whose workforce, affected mentally and physically, has reduced work capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Uttar Pradesh model to tackle malnutrition<\/strong><br>&#8211; In 2020, the <strong>Department of Women and Child Development<\/strong> and the <strong>Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission<\/strong> collaborated to set up a <strong>decentralised production<\/strong> of take home rations by women\u2019s enterprises.<br>&#8211;\u00a0These enterprises produce fortified and nutritious foods for pregnant\/breastfeeding mothers and children, provided as take home ration through the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme.<br>&#8211; The feasibility of this model was demonstrated by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) by using two pilot plants in Unnao and Fatehpur in 2021.<br>&#8211; This unique gender-transformative approach provides livelihood opportunities to local women, empowering them economically.\u00a0<br>&#8211; The Department of Women and Child Development has also used the opportunity to re-formulate the take home ration \u2014 it is nutritious with the inclusion of high-quality milk powder, oil, vitamins and minerals, which can help to support the health and well-being of children and prevent malnutrition.\u00a0<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Steps of the government&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Government has accorded high priority to the issue of malnutrition and is implementing several schemes like <strong>Anganwadi Services<\/strong>, <strong>Scheme for Adolescent Girls and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana<\/strong> (PMMVY) under the <strong>Umbrella Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) <\/strong>Scheme as direct targeted interventions to address the problem of malnutrition in the country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;<strong>POSHAN Abhiyaan <\/strong>launched in&nbsp; 2018, aims to achieve improvement in nutritional status of Adolescent Girls, Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers in a time bound manner by adopting a synergised and result oriented approach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Suggestions and Way Forward&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is imperative that \u201cgood nutrition\u201d becomes everyone\u2019s mantra if we are serious about addressing the <strong>malnutrition challenge.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research institutions <\/strong>and the <strong>agriculture extension system<\/strong> have to work together for nutrition-sensitive agri-food systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Awareness is also needed regarding the nutrient content in ultra-processed foods and their connection to obesity.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Digital technology and media, <\/strong>both print and electronic, can play a big role in all this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Investment in nutrition<\/strong> is crucial to achieving all the <strong>sustainable development goals (SDG), especially SDG 3,<\/strong> that aims to ensure healthy lives and well-being to achieve the target of reducing neonatal and child mortality and maternal mortality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Preventing early marriage<\/strong>, teen pregnancies and improving women\u2019s nutritional status can go a long way in breaking the inter-generational cycle of under-nutrition.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Women require more support <\/strong>from the government in the form of flexible working hours and cr\u00e8ches for working mothers.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They also need<strong> women-oriented health services<\/strong> such as antenatal health care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enhancing women\u2019s membership<\/strong> in credit and service cooperatives could promote more financial independence for women in the rural sector&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;There is a need to ensure girls complete high school education, women are economically empowered and are equipped to take decisions for self and family care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Mains Practise\u00a0 Question\u00a0<\/strong><br><strong>[Q]<\/strong> Malnutrition among women in India is a complex problem that requires a systemic overhaul of the public administration and service delivery systems, as well as engagement from the community.Discuss\u00a0<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Syllabus : GS 2\/Issues related to poverty and hunger\u00a0 In Context&nbsp;
