and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce\/remove GHG (greenhouse gases) emissions, where possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dimensions of climate-smart practices include:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Water-smart, weather-smart, energy-smart, and carbon-smart practices.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They improve productivity, deal with land degradation, and improve soil health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How?<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improvements in agroforestry, sustainable water management, and precision agriculture are all concrete examples of CSA ideas in action, and they are not limited by any one country.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSA promotes crop diversification, increases water efficiency, and integrates drought-resistant crop types, all of which help lessen the disruptive effects of climate change.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There has been a worldwide uptick in community-supported agriculture efforts.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These efforts are made in an attempt to create agricultural systems that are both resilient and environmentally friendly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CSA in India:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The National Action Plan on Climate Change emphasises the role of climate-resilient agriculture in <strong>India\u2019s adaptation measures<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Government initiatives in India focusing on CSA:<\/strong> The National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change, National Innovation on Climate Resilient Agriculture, Soil Health Mission, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana, Biotech-KISAN, and Climate Smart Village are a few examples of government initiatives in India focusing on CSA.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Public and private sector initiatives:<\/strong> Various public and private sector entities such as farmer-producer organisations and NGOs are also working towards the adoption of CSA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Significance of CSA:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Enhanced output with ecological stability:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The importance of CSA lies in its ability to increase agricultural output while maintaining ecological stability.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This correlation is not only a desired consequence but rather essential for long-term food security and sustainable resource usage in a warming planet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased resilience:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By reducing exposure to climate-related dangers and shocks, CSA increases resilience in the face of longer-term stressors like shorter seasons and erratic weather patterns.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic stability:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In addition to these benefits, a significant outcome of CSA implementation is the increasing economic autonomy of farmers.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSA causes a dramatic change in farming communities\u2019 economic and social structure by distributing information about and providing access to climate-resilient methods.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Uplifting disadvantaged farmers:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As the climate changes, farmers, significantly those already disadvantaged, can gain enormously from adopting climate-smart techniques.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The majority of Indian farmers are small or marginal. Therefore, CSA can play a significant role in helping them increase their profits.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reduced GHG emissions:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The agricultural sector also produces a large amount of GHGs. The sector\u2019s share in GHG\u2019s emissions in 2018 was 17%.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Therefore, CSA implementation is crucial for lowering GHG emissions and protecting biodiversity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Furthermore, it aids in enhancing farmland carbon storage.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Way ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The most challenging aspect of dealing with global warming is to <strong>create localised responses<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Therefore, investing in<strong> capacity-building <\/strong>programmes and providing <strong>practical CSA tools and knowledge <\/strong>is essential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Agroforestry and carbon sequestration<\/strong> are two examples of CSA measures that could help India meet its international obligations and contribute to the global fight against climate change.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The intersection of climate vulnerability and agricultural importance places India at a unique juncture where <strong>CSA adoption is not merely desirable but essential<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Daily Mains Question<\/strong><br><\/span><strong>[Q]<\/strong> Adoption of Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) in India is not merely desirable but essential.
