What is Human Trafficking?<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n
It is the<\/span><\/span><\/span> recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> or <\/span><\/span><\/span>receipt <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>of people through<\/span><\/span><\/span> force, fraud or deception<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, with the aim of <\/span><\/span><\/span>exploiting them for profit<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Men, women and children<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of <\/span><\/span><\/span>all ages and from all backgrounds<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> can become victims of this crime, which occurs in every region of the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
The traffickers <\/span><\/span><\/span>often use violence<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> or <\/span><\/span><\/span>fraudulent employment agencies<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>fake promises of education and job opportunities<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to trick and coerce their victims.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Human trafficking is a <\/span><\/span><\/span>global crime<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> that trades in people and exploits them for profit.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n
Report highlights<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gender specific trafficking: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>Child trafficking <\/span><\/span><\/span>victims come from all backgrounds and genders,<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> according to the report.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
\n
Some 57.4 percent of child victims were female and 42.6 per cent were male according to the dataset.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
Age-wise data:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
\n
The report noted that<\/span><\/span><\/span> no age range is immune<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to child trafficking. Child victims ranged from<\/span><\/span><\/span> 0 to 17 years old<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, it added.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Children aged 13-17<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> formed the <\/span><\/span><\/span>largest group of child victims<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (46.6 percent).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
A small but significant percentage of child victims (12.6 percent) were aged between<\/span><\/span><\/span> 0 and 2 years old<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, indicating that these victims were likely born into trafficking.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
Trafficking for Forced labour:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
\n
Close to half of the child victims of trafficking (43.4 percent) were being <\/span><\/span><\/span>trafficked for forced labour <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(mainly boys), in a wide range of industries, such as domestic work, begging and agriculture.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
Trafficking for Sexual exploitation:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
\n
Sexual exploitation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, including through <\/span><\/span><\/span>prostitution, pornography, and sexual servitude,<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> is also prominent, affecting 20 percent of trafficked children, <\/span><\/span><\/span>predominantly girls<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00e2€\u00af\u00e2€\u00af\u00e2€\u00af\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
The report noted that victims trafficked for sexual exploitation were <\/span><\/span><\/span>commonly trafficked internationally,<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> while those trafficked for forced labour were more likely to be trafficked domestically.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
\n
In cases of international trafficking, children are mostly trafficked to <\/span><\/span><\/span>neighbouring, wealthier countries<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00e2€\u00af\u00e2€\u00af\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
Other reasons for trafficking: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>Child victims reported being exploited in\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

Domestic work (14.5 percent),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Begging (10.2 percent),\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Hospitality (3.4 percent) and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Agriculture (3.3 percent).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
Countries for trafficking:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

About 37.3 percent of child victims <\/span><\/span><\/span>originating from Europe and Central Asia <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>were trafficked for sexual exploitation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Over 56.9 percent of identified child victims had been<\/span><\/span><\/span> trafficked within their country of origin<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
Involvement of keens:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

More than half of the child victims reported the<\/span><\/span><\/span> involvement of friends and family <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>in their recruitment into trafficking (37.4 percent and 14.7 percent, respectively; 51.1 percent, taken together).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

The report is based on the analysis of extensive, globally sourced data, using the<\/span><\/span><\/span> IOM Victims of Trafficking Database (VoTD).<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
The VoTD is the largest available international database of individual victims of trafficking.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
It contains primary data collected from approximately 69,000 victims of human trafficking.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

These victims belong to <\/span><\/span><\/span>156 nationalities <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and were <\/span><\/span><\/span>trafficked in 186 countries<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
About 18.3 percent of VoTDs in the database were children.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Draft of the Trafficking in Persons (Prevention, Care and Rehabilitation) Bill 2021 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>was published by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in June 2021. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
