{"id":17386,"date":"2023-09-20T17:22:06","date_gmt":"2023-09-20T11:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/?p=17386"},"modified":"2023-09-20T17:22:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T11:52:07","slug":"global-report-on-hypertension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/20-09-2023\/global-report-on-hypertension","title":{"rendered":"Global Report on Hypertension"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In News<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The World Health Organisation<\/strong> has released a report named <strong>\u201cGlobal report on hypertension: the race against a silent killer\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">About<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The report compiles data for the<strong> first time<\/strong> on the <strong>far-reaching consequences of uncontrolled hypertension<\/strong>, including heart attacks, strokes and premature death, along with substantial economic losses for communities and countries.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is Hypertension?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hypertension (high blood pressure) is when the pressure in blood vessels is too high (140\/90 mmHg or higher). It is common but can be serious if not treated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Symptoms: <\/strong>Severe headaches, chest pain, dizziness, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision or other vision changes, anxiety, confusion, buzzing in the ears, nosebleeds, abnormal heart rhythm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Risk factors:<\/strong> older age, genetics, being overweight or obese, not being physically active, high-salt diet, drinking too much alcohol.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lifestyle changes <\/strong>like eating a healthier diet, quitting tobacco and being more active can help lower blood pressure.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Major Highlights of the Report<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Global Scenario:<\/strong> High blood pressure<strong> causes more deaths than <\/strong>other leading risk factors, including tobacco use and high blood sugar.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The number of people living with hypertension <strong>doubled<\/strong> between 1990 and 2019. More than three-quarters of adults with hypertension live in LMICs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High systolic blood pressure is the world\u2019s leading risk factor for mortality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian Scenario: <\/strong>In India, an estimated <strong>188.3 million adults<\/strong> aged 30\u201379 years have hypertension.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>About 67 million more people with hypertension would need to be effectively treated in the country to achieve a <strong>50 percent control rate.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The prevalence of high blood pressure in India is <strong>slightly lower than the global average<\/strong> \u2014 31 percent.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated 37 percent of these have been diagnosed and 30 pe cent are receiving treatment for it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The India Hypertension Control Initiative, a large-scale hypertension intervention under the National Health Mission, has been recognised for its positive work done within the primary healthcare system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Silent Killer: <\/strong>Hypertension affects one in three adults and presents with no symptoms \u2013 the \u201csilent killer\u201d. Almost half of people with hypertension are unaware of their condition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prevalence:<\/strong> About <strong>one-third<\/strong> of the world\u2019s adults live with hypertension and are at risk of heart disease, stroke, or death.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Globally, the prevalence of hypertension is slightly higher among males (34%) than females (32%).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Status of hypertension care: <\/strong>Currently, among adults aged 30\u201379 years with hypertension, only <strong>54% have been diagnose<\/strong>d with the condition, <strong>42% are being treated<\/strong> for their hypertension, and <strong>21% are considered <\/strong>to have their hypertension controlled.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only about <strong>one in five people<\/strong> with hypertension have controlled their hypertension.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatment coverage is highest in the Region of the Americas (60%) and lowest in the African Region (27%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global Target:<\/strong> The world is <strong>not on track <\/strong>to meet the voluntary global target of a <strong>25% reduction<\/strong> in the prevalence of raised blood pressure (uncontrolled hypertension) by 2025.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prevention:<\/strong> Increasing the percentage of people whose hypertension is under control globally to 50% would <strong>prevent 76 million deaths between 2023 and 2050<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Treating hypertension is one of the most important interventions to meet the <strong>Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.4<\/strong> of a <strong>one-third reduction<\/strong> in premature mortality from the leading noncommunicable diseases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recommendation:<\/strong> WHO supports the <strong>reduction of dietary sodium <\/strong>(and increase in potassium), the reduction of alcohol consumption, the control of tobacco use, the promotion of physical activity, and a reduction in air pollution to prevent hypertension.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The most effective ways to control these hypertension risk factors is via <strong>large-scale, population-level public health programmes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/epaper.thehindu.com\/ccidist-ws\/th\/th_delhi\/issues\/52440\/OPS\/G8HBP62N4.1+GJMBP6OV6.1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TH<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Syllabus: GS2\/Health In News About What is Hypertension?
