Interventions, Issues Arising out of their Design &amp; Implementation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In Context<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming health care worldwide, and India has the potential to be at the forefront of this revolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">India\u2019s Healthcare Journey<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The country has made tremendous progress on key health metrics.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Infant mortality has improved by four times,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maternal mortality has improved by seven times and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The average life expectancy of an Indian is up nearly 30% from 55 years to over 70 now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Today, India has <strong>world-class health-care infrastructure<\/strong> along with <strong>incredible clinical talent<\/strong> that delivers the best in class clinical outcomes at incredible scale and at a fraction of the global price.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s expertise<\/strong> in highly specialised areas such as<strong> organ transplants, cardiology, oncology and more<\/strong> has made the country a fast-growing destination for<strong> medical value travel (MVT)<\/strong>, not just for the <strong>price <\/strong>but also for the<strong> speed of access<\/strong> and the sheer <strong>quality of care<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">India\u2019s Achievements in Healthcare<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Proton beam therapy technology:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A significant milestone in this journey is the introduction of proton beam therapy technology, making India a regional leader in cancer treatment.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients from across the globe are drawn to India for its world-class medical expertise, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and cost-effective care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Orthopaedic procedures:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Orthopaedic procedures, including joint replacements and spinal surgeries, are conducted by highly skilled surgeons using minimally invasive techniques.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This attracts patients seeking top-notch orthopaedic care at competitive prices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Robotic surgeries:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Robotic surgery has also gained popularity, with India\u2019s hospitals adopting robotic-assisted techniques for precision and faster recovery.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The country\u2019s expertise in this area draws international patients seeking minimally invasive, high-precision surgical interventions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medical value travel (MVT):<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MVT is gaining strategic importance given its ability to<strong> create employment<\/strong> as well as <strong>earn foreign exchange<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While India is already one of the leading destinations for patients seeking care abroad, there is adequate headroom for growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Challenges<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India\u2019s non-communicable diseases (NCD) burden:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is now the world\u2019s diabetes capital; also, millions have hypertension, and its youth are succumbing to heart attacks, cancer, respiratory issues, depression and more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If left unchecked, India\u2019s non-communicable diseases (NCD) burden will be nearly $4 trillion by 2030.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is one of the biggest roadblocks to India\u2019s development and will create an \u2018age tax\u2019 on India\u2019s demographic dividend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s Struggle with Health indicators:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India still faces issues like, poor Health, lack of adequate number of doctors, lack of expenditure on health, poor sanitation, lack of safe drinking water, increased drug resistance of many diseases,&nbsp; lack of infrastructure in remote locations, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Burden of healthcare in India:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vaccinating a single child<\/strong> against all childhood illnesses costs at least Rs 1,600.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A day of hospitalisation at a public hospital<\/strong> is estimated at Rs 2,800.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At a private hospital, it is Rs 6,800.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add to these the expenses for<strong> supporting women through deliveries, control of infectious disease, primary healthcare, and much more<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is, therefore, no surprise that the <strong>system fails the most vulnerable<\/strong> and they are <strong>forced to turn to the expensive private sector.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For elderly and sick:&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The poor, elderly and sick are already at a disadvantage and the burden of health expenditure makes this even worse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Suggestions<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Improved awareness &amp; health checks:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The health-care industry should join hands and <strong>protect India from the menace of non-communicable diseases (NCD)<\/strong> by increasing <strong>awareness<\/strong>, advocating <strong>better lifestyle choices<\/strong> and<strong> enabling comprehensive health checks<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Health checks<\/strong> should include proper scans instead of having just blood tests that are simply inadequate to test for many early signs of diseases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Public-private partnerships for MVTs:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Public-private partnerships can help create a conducive environment for MVT by jointly investing in infrastructure, promoting medical tourism, and setting up international health-care accreditation bodies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Role of AI:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming health care worldwide, and India has the potential to be at the forefront of this revolution.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diagnostics: <\/strong>One of the key areas where AI can make a significant impact is in diagnostics.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI-powered tools can enhance the accuracy and efficiency of medical diagnoses, leading to faster treatment decisions and better patient outcomes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Predictions &amp; preventions:<\/strong> Additionally, AI can help predict disease outbreaks, analyse health-care data, and optimise treatment plans, expediting health-care procedures, and revolutionising drug discovery ultimately making health care more personalised and effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Way Ahead<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India stands at a pivotal moment in its health-care journey.
