{"id":17262,"date":"2023-09-16T22:00:50","date_gmt":"2023-09-16T16:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/?p=17262"},"modified":"2023-09-16T22:00:54","modified_gmt":"2023-09-16T16:30:54","slug":"rosh-hashanah-16-09-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-09-2023\/rosh-hashanah-16-09-2023","title":{"rendered":"Rosh Hashanah"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Context<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Prime Minister of India extended greetings to Jewish people around the world on Rosh Hashanah.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">About Rosh Hashanah<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a Hebrew phrase that means <strong>&#8216;the head of the year<\/strong>&#8216;, and followed as&nbsp; a <strong>\u2018new year day\u2019 in Judaism.<\/strong> It begins on the <strong>first day of the seventh month of the Jewish calendar.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As it is <strong>celebrated for 48 hours<\/strong>, it is also called <strong>&#8216;yoma arichta&#8217;<\/strong>, meaning <strong>&#8216;a long day&#8217;.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Origin<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is <strong>not explicitly mentioned in the Torah<\/strong> <strong>(Judaism\u2019s founding religious text)<\/strong> and appears under different names in the Bible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, Torah mentions <strong>a sacred occasion that starts on the first day of the seventh month of the Jewish calendar<\/strong> around the time Rosh Hashanah is scheduled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Though the holiday was likely well established by the sixth century B.C., the phrase \u201cRosh Hashanah\u201d shows up for the first time in the Mishna, a Jewish code of law compiled in 200 A.D.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How is Rosh Hashanah celebrated?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jewish people blow a Shofar, a curved ram\u2019s horn, and pray near a body of water in a Tashlich ceremony.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They eat apples and honey together to symbolise a sweet new year, and eat pomegranate seeds that represent the 613 mitzvot, or commandments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1957656\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source: PIB<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Syllabus: GS1\/Culture Context About Rosh Hashanah Origin How is Rosh Hashanah celebrated?
